Is it possible to remove the side pipes without removing the header pipes? How about the reverse process?

Sure. Just remove the four bolts holding the tabs together and the rear mount. Then curse a bit while simultaneously pulling the pipes apart and moving the back end around. But, it's easier if you loosen the primary pipe bolts.
Putting the pipes back on, it's mandatory that the primary pipes are loose when you mate the side pipes.
Ditto what Bob said. Took mine off a few years ago and had no problem getting them off or putting them back on.
Definitely loosen the primaries to allow the pipes to move a little bit at the joint. With my big block I couldn't really get to the bolts securing the rear primary on the driver's side but it didn't cause a problem as long as the other three could move a little.

I have 2 sets that I switch back and forth. I never had to loosen the primaries, you may cause a header leak. I just pull on the front while I wiggle the back up and down and in and out an inch or two.
It's actually amazing to me that the primaries almost always line up so well. right out of the box. At any rate, after the initial installation and the car is run, the pipes will relax a bit, so on subsequent installations they will fit a little better.
When I first put my pipes together, I used plastic wire ties on the loose primaries to hold them together down near the ends, each tie holding two pipes. Worked like a charm.
