Remington knew what he was doing. The contact areas are doubled with small sections of pipe to fit the hooks. Larger diameter pipe for the cross-piece. And the bend is for additional tin clearance on small nose cars.

***Note also, the hooks are reversed...

ERA 2076 , refer to my earlier post on this .... I think the 3rd one down . I`ve down it before to get the car on a rollback ( broke a valve spring ) . Just don`t do any sudden jerks or try a vertical lift .
