ERA - front battery cut off switch
Hi
I searched first !....how are you folks wiring in a cut off switch on a front mounted battery in a ERA...I just bought one of those "green" knob simple switches and was just going to mount directly to the battery as a simple fix...but wanted to see what other set ups are out there

If you are willing to spend a little money, check out a Battery Brain Gold. I have one on my ERA and you can connect/disconnect the battery with the supplied remote. I have had mine on my car for a few years, with no problems.

Uhhhhh, I don't know.... It looks like something that would have a mind to break down somehow. I like the plain old mechanical green screw knob thingy.

Um, not sure when I would think " I'm going to disconnect my battery, watch this" and pull out a fob...  just wondering... I have the removable key turn thingy in the trunk.  |

The green knob works quite well just take it with you. Vise grips are the only way to overcome it OR have another Green Knob.

Revisiting this thread. I have a green knob but it is toward the outside of the car (under the fenderwell) and behind the fresh air hose, so it's hard to reach. I'm considering a similar simple mechanical switch I can mount on a bracket under the hood in a more easily reachable location. Anyone done this? What's the setup/switch?

From the sound of it, his battery is mounted the reverse of yours. A simple turning on the battery 180 degrees will work to make his access like yours.

Bill is right. Mine has the positive toward the outside of the car, which makes it hard to reach. ERA recommends it's installed this way so the cables can reach. If I turned mine around so the positive terminal is closer, both terminals would be facing the front of the car.
But I just noticed it looks like Patrick installed the switch on the negative terminal. Am I right? This would solve the problem as well.

I also use the "removable key turn thingy". It is mounted on a bracket on the dash support tubes. For security purposes remove the key and take it with you or hide it somewhere in the car. For safety purposes you want the turn off within arms reach or where others can get to it easily in an emergency. Like an electrical fire while driving down the road or a stuck throttle.  Just two of the times that I have been glad that I had a cut off switch. |

Yes, on the negative. That is the preferred method for installation. |

Lippy, mine is mounted on the negative terminal also . Not ideal but I've done it this way on my Corvette for years and now the ERA - with no problems.
I prefer the knife blade contact-type switch and use that on my Corvette. I have had green knob switches that sometime make contact and sometimes don't. But not enough room in the ERA to use the knife blade type. |
