Spin your cable with a drill and have the brightest member of the family sit in the car and tell you if the speedometer gauge moves. If it does, the gauge works.

Yes, but the old one may have lost it's calibration in the process of slowly going off to the great speedometer graveyard in the sky. There is some chance the new one will read correctly when hooked up.
