Default Dash area squeak at idle - both sides

838 has a squeak that mostly is audible at idle. It seems to be in the dash area on both ends. On bumpy roads or sometimes body twisting, it can be heard.

I initially thought steering column. I put some anti-squeak tape between the steering column and the mounting bracket. That is not it.

I can't seem to isolate it. I have pulled on various parts and no luck.

Anyone seen anything common to the ERA Cobras on a likely area?

John

If this was an original the answer would be:

Ken Miles: It rattles and squeaks at idle.
Shelby: You're paid to drive it at 200MPH. If you can hear it squeak then let me know.

It's a race car. Mine was full of rattles and squeaks. It meant it was alive.

John,

Your exhaust is obviously not loud enough. This sort of audible aberration should be undetectable anytime the engine is running.

Make sure that it's not an exhaust leak at the head. Sometimes they squeak.

I know you have built a couple ERAs so it’s obviously not something simple.

Seeing as it’s on both sides, windshield frame mounts rubbing on edge of body cuts? Were the foot boxes fully bonded in?

Kind of odd as although I’ve got a little hearing loss mine seems tight as an anvil with the exception of a slight tinny sound underneath that must be something in my exhaust or the baffle in the fuel tank which clanks around as I don’t keep much gas in the tank. I guess you’ve asking ERA for any similar experiences they have dealt with?

Thanks for the comments.

I don’t think it is the windshield - I have held it during the noise to no effect.

Exhaust is possible - I will check that.

I will find it. It may take time; I am relentless on things like this.

Grubby, sounds like you've looked at all the usual suspects. Maybe, if you are very unlucky, the squeeeeeek is coming from the bell housing area. Perhaps the block plate? Just for grins, check all the bell housing bolts. You might get lucky. My 2¢

I had a squeak that I couldn’t find under my dash. While opening my hood latches I heard a similar type squeak. I put some grease on both latches and catches as well as the rubber stop. To my surprise the squeak went away.

FOUND

Throttle linkage with the main squeak from the heim joint that is mounted directly behind the carb. As the engine moved back and forth, the throttle shaft slips thru the heim joint. A dab of grease and the problem is solved.

I greased the throttle pedal shaft as well, but I don’t think it was contributing.

This shows sounds travel and are very hard to determine the origin.
