Some thoughts on custom paint on a Cobra, or any other street driven car for that matter.
It will look absolutely beautyful when it's finished. You'll spend a fortune on it. You'll have heart failure the first time you get a rock chip on it. You'll spend another fortune trying to match it if you ever get into a fender bender.

Use a factory color on a street driven car. Gotta be something off the showroom floor in the last 10 - 15 years you'll like. The new base coat, color coat, clear coats are absolutely stunning. Use plenty of primer and sealer on the car before beginning the paint.

Ask for the best painter in the shop to do your car. Stick a $50 or $100 in his/her pocket when the job is accepted. Don't rush this.

When it's done, they should give you some touch up paint for rock chips. Since factory colors are all computer matched, any body shop with the paint code should be able to match it in the event of a fender bender.

				 My color...
 Is a factory 1991 Infinity color...with clearcoats.
The ghost stripes and custom logo would be impossible to match, but unless someone plows into me, the only problem should be a small rock chip here or there...

Pics in my photo gallery... the colors are "Dark burgundy cherry pearl" and Titanium ghost stripes and titanium/silver logo...the true beauty cannot be seen in the pics I currently have..much better pics later, when she's delivered.

Look thru color books at your local paint supply..if you see something you think you like, maybe they can make up a small batch and spray it on a small piece of sheetmetal first?

I researched all paints pretty well and HOK was at the top of my list when I saw a photo of Creeper's candy red Unique. My painter also liked to work with HOK paints but did warn that touch up could be very difficult;I ended up going with PPG platinum and it looks great and touch ups should be no problem. chuck |

I used HOK Orion Silver with Silver White pearl for the stripes. It really pops in the sunlight.
Any silver is rough to touch up so I didn't mind using the HOK system. The paint is quite good.... Over 1300 miles and not one chip (and I do drive it on the freeway)

 Gary,
With this little engine, I am barely able to make it highway speeds...
xcobraj,

Don't mention my name to Tony because I think my car is the reason he wimpers when he hears HOK.. He didn't have much fun painting it.
There is also a few more pictures under different lighting in my gallery.

Ask your painter if he has used Glasurite 54 line. That's what's on mine. Check the gallery and look at the "Evolution of the Cobra" picture. It shows the paint off the best. The colors are no doubt different from what you're choosing, but that paint is HARD and I drove it a LOT on the street and highways with out chips.
FYI that is not a $5-6K paint job. Nearer $15K including some glass modification. There are no waves or ripples anywhere on the car...even under fluorescent light.

 Al
