Default Fan Problem

My fan stopped working - doesn't turn on when engine gets hot and cannot be turned on from the switch on the dash board. A friend tested the fan itself and it does work. We replaced the connector from the fan to the wire that goes back to the firewall, but there is apparently something going on (actually not going on) from that point on.

Suggestions would be appreciated, including what parts I may need, especially parts that may not be available locally.

Thanks.

The switch should control a fan relay. Could be, replacing the relay to fix your problem.

Is a "fan relay" something that I can pick up locally?

On an ERA, there's a fan relay on the firewall, just to the left of the fuse boxes. It's a standard Bosch relay which most auto parts stores can match.

The Wiring primer has fan problem troubleshooting.

Thanks - I checked locally - all they have is the VW fan relay that is listed as an option, along with the Bosch options - that will work, right?

The VW relay will probably work. Make sure it's rated for at least 25A.

Probably work? It's listed in the ERA Assembly/Service handbook as an option, along with the Bosch options (three options in all) - so should I still be concerned with the "probably work" comment? Not being a mechanical type, this stuff sort of scares me!

By the way, a different subject - my brake lights only work if I press hard on the brake pedal - is there a way to prompt the brake light to be more responsive - say to just a little pressure on the brake pedal?

Thanks, again - I'm really happy with my ERA!

The reason I said probably is that I don't know the rating of the VW part - which is why I requested that you check before you buy...

Brake lights: See here.
