Painted Wheels

What is the process for painting the wheel centers. As I understand it, the six pin rims all come standard grey and if you need another color, you need to paint them. Is that the case, if so, what is the process for painting the wheels.

I 'm surprise no jumped on this. I have six pin unpainted wheels i'm seriously looking into having them painted. They are tough to keep clean. You have to use some aggessive stuff to get them clean then it takes a lot to get the aluminum back after the chemicals dull them up.
I think the paint will be easier to keep clean

Me too LLoyd...fyi: I talked with ERA the other day and they said it is best to paint the wheel. I have heard of some folks using a powder coater but after talking to some wheel experts it may not be the best idea b/c heat can distort the wheel....I asked them what kind of paint to use and they said two part epoxy.

Kramer .. did your car get to CO yet? Don't recall if you said. Regarding wheel paint, you gonna bust the tires off the rims and have it done at a painter? Or are you thinking about rattle can paint? I agree about paint being easier to clean. And while the wheels are new is probably a good time.

Hello Sam...Good to hear from you. Send me your email when you get a minute..I was wondering if you are going to RUN and GUN and if you are bringing 745 with you.

739 has been at home now for a few weeks. I just got the engine finished and hopefully will take off next week for the install.

As far as the paint, I am going with the rattle can...probably after we get the engine install done...i am using TWM induction so I think it will take me a while to get it sorted out.

What stage is your car in now???? Is it at your house yet?

No car yet. It's still waiting a differential as far as I know. Peter owes me a call. I think it is pretty much done except for the rear end assembly. Then I have to catch Rich Lacy on an east coast swing.

Run N Gun is still a goal, but it is looking unlikely unless something happens pretty quick at ERA. I couldn't get the motor and tranny in it fast enough if I got it any later than mid Sept. Would I go without a car? I'd like to, but will see how it goes. Will pm my email.

Scotch-Brite pad, wipe down with some Acryli-Clean (pro level degreaser - go to auto paint store) and a couple rattle cans of PlastiKote Body Shop paint (Pep Boys). It's all in the prep for a long lasting finish!

Rattle can, I use a paint specifically for wheels. Nice shiny finish, white in my case. I also use a rattle can of high temp paint for the side pipes, also white. The first time I painted the wheels I took them off but left the tires mounted, I leave the outer edge of the rim plain 'polished' (no paint). I also removed the side pipes for the first painting. Now I leave both pipe and wheels on and do touch up as required.

I believe that Eastwood makes a clear coat for aluminium wheels. Check their site.

Just finished painting my Trigo's. Sanded off the rough casting edges, polished the rims, then scuffed the areas to be painted with maroon scotch brite pads, wiped down with alcohol.. PPG DPLF white epoxy primer, then shot 2 coats of PPG DCC Wimeledon White urethane enamel. I am really happy with the smooth glossy finish! Used a Sata Minijet.

what did you use to scuff the paint before painted....i.e what grit/ material?

If you can get it done by Labor Day, either Rich or Doug should be out there. Doug is picking up my FIA Saturday afternoon for delivery to the Gaithersburg, MD area and expected to be there either Labor Day weekend or a couple days after.
