An engine test stand may be sufficient to get what you are looking for without the expense of a dyno. dyno-ing has benefits but since you are not interested in exact numbers, and more interested in functionality a "run-in" on a properly equipped stand may be the trick.
that way if you have issues, gaskets etc that are not behaving you can address them on the stand--- prior to spending x hours getting the thing in the actual engine bay.
