Intake manifold plug - what is this for? (noob question)
Ok, I'm sure some of you will get some chuckles out of this. There is a screw-in plug on my intake manifold for my 427 FE near the distributor. I have included 3 pics. What is it for?
It is leaking a little bit and I was planning on pulling it out, putting some teflon tape on it and putting it back in to stop the leak.
Thanks!

Probably for PCV inlet and/or auxiliary vacuum connections.

I don't know that it's leaking water. I haven't checked yet. Looks more like oil, but I haven't felt it (too busy with my broken pan bolt).

That low and behind the distributor it's not coolant, that would go straite into the intake valley and looks small for a PCV, i say pull the plug and tape it up no harm no foul.

I searched and didn't find any threads that seemed relevant, but doesn't mean my answer wasn't there somewhere.....figured someone would have a quick answer on this for sure.

My first answer assumed it was a vacuum tap. If it doesn't go into the intake plenum, then it most likely goes into the water jacket and is for a temp sensor. If it goes through into the lifter valley... maybe an oil breather or PCV inlet?

Heck my answer ASS-UMED it was leaking water, what else COULD it be leaking? I know of no oil passages in that intake manifold, water and air, that's it.

I guess regardless, pulling the plug, taping it and putting it back should solve my problem right?

When you pull it, let us know what comes outta da hole, you got our couriosity going now.
Yeah, that should do the trick, tape and re-install.

If it's into the water jacket, it's probably for a factory hot-idle switch.
If it's into the manifold vacuum, it's probably for a factory anti-backfire valve.

If I remember right, a temp actuated vacuum switch for the carbon canister (vapor recovery) system.
In other words a plug holder...

My Blue Thunder intake has the same threaded opening. It's a second port in the front water passage. I put a threaded plug in mine.

Mine is Blue Thunder too and I have a threaded plug in it, just think it needs a little tape. Thanks!

I put my temp sensor in that hole and put a thermostatic fan control where you have your temp sensor. On the new CSX cars there is a pink wire with the alternator wires that will control the cooling fans. The original street cars have a bung on the bottom of the expansion tank for the fan control. If you had a heater I believe you would use your current temp sensor position for one of the heater hoses.
Basically, put some Teflon tape on that sucker and forget about it.
