FUNFER2 Kevin Look at the Kirkham setup. They are not cheap but have the correct ratios between crankshaft, waterpump and Alt spinning speed. I tryed a set of march pulleys and the motor was overheating after a 30 minute run. Everything is too slow, even the charging system. Rick L.

Byron- yep, all three.

I have been talking with the owner of this company below, and his pulleys. He's very knowledgable and the pulley's look awesome. I only need one grove pulley's. I'll have to see if they have for each pulley size.

Rick- Although the Kirkhams would be top quality, I assume the're very expensive. How much ?
Where do you find parts on thier site ?

Rick,

I have a set of the MArch pulleys on my FE and I dont have any problems whats so ever.

I dont even use my aux fans and my primary fan cycles.

Are you sure you did not have other issues?

Rick ... I`ve also got a set of the March pulleys on mine and have had no problems .... and last summer was in the upper 90`s and low 100`s for a while .
This is the set Robert Pond recommended I use .

Kevin, the standard Ford pulley for the water pump is 6 3/4" in diameter. The water pump pulley's from March are #1912 = 6 3/4" for their "performance" pulley and for thier high flow pulley, it is #1552 = 6". Crank pulleys are 5 1/2" for both sets and I can check the parts books for the stock ford and post again.

Priobe and Bobcat: What are the size of your pulley's, water pump primarily?

FUNFER2, Kevin, The Ford parts book doesn't show crank pulley diameters but, I have a single sheave stock pulley that I can measure tonight if youo want.

The march set didn't work for racing
 
Guys the march set didn't turn the water pump fast enough on the track and the motor would be 230F after just 10 minutes Charging at idle with a 70A alt was only 26 amps. The battery was being drained with all the fans on and electric fuel pump and MSD system. Asp made me a custom setup that works fine. 195 after 20 minute heats.
On the street the March system may work OK. Track is a different story I am running the edelbrock water pump with hi flow plate on the impellor. This helped alot with temp. The rest was going to a bigger thermostat for flow. Motor heats to 180-185 is 3 minutes and is steady after that. 30 degree drop in coolant temp until everything is warmed up. The kirkham setup is sharp. I know they are not cheap but milling them is not cheap either. Rick L.

Rick, Which March set are you talking about? The performance or hi-flow? I have both
for a new build. I alos will be using a Flow Kooler hi flow water pump.

With my new 496 side oiler, I expect it will get warmer than my old 428. I'll need the crank, pump and alt. pulleys.

What sizes are needed to overdrive the pump and run my high amp alternator ?

At what point, do we overdrive the pumps too much, that the dwell time in the radiator is not long enough to cool properly ?

Since I only need single groove pulleys, the wider serpentine belt looks interesting.

So, what sizes would work well ?

byron w Byron there was only 1 set. Under drive on all 3 pulleys. Crankshaft,Water pump, and Alt. I never installed the ALT pulley. They are like 5" for both water pump and crankshaft. There is a note about overheating if the car sits for a long time at idle. There is not enough flow of coolant through the motor. SBF guys had the same problems. I also did alot of messing to get the temps where I wanted them. Aluminum radiator, grinding out ports in the intake manifold. More steel pipes to stop and rubber hoses from colapsing. larger thermostat center opening. Aluminum motor runs hotter than iron one over all. Rick L.

I had the March set and had the same problem that Rick talked about. The easy fix was to trash March's tiny crank pulley and and to install a single groove OEM 6 3/4" diameter pulley. I'm over-driving the waterpump by around 15% now and don't have anymore cooling issues, thanks to the pulley change and other modifications.

The March set is designed for a more than adequately cooled engine that's looking to shed some parasitic losses, NOT an engine that's next to boiling over at every stoplight.

Pump's an Ebok w/a 6" single groove March Pulley and the alternator is a GM (12-SI) 140 amp made by Powermaster with it's standard chrome/billet pulley.

It doesn't come with a pulley, you need to provide it. There's too many variables for Professional products to provide a "standard" pulley.. (diameter? 1 groove?, 2 groove?, 3 groove? etc...)

Personally, after studying this issue a bunch of times, I don't believe that is a factor anymore. It seems to me the most important issue is not dwell time, but actual water flow rates. The more water you flow the cooler that water is going to be, period. Therefore a pulley turning the water pump faster is going to be superior to one turning it slower.

By the way, I running a stock OEM iron water pump for years on my ERA and was often on the edge of running to hot. I replaced it some time ago with a modern E-Brock unit and was astonished to see what a difference that made!!! The new alloy pumps are far superior to the OEM pumps.

I know that in the past, some systems were runnibg through the radiator too fast, so the water did not stay in the radiator long enough to cool well. I also ran the iron pump and when I changed to the Edelbrock,......big difference.

Like I mentioned, what size pulleys work the best ?

Dave- How do you figure the 15% and what's your 3 pulley size's ?
