Sound difference between hydraulic vs solid camshafts
What is the sound difference between a solid vs a hydraulic roller camshaft if the specs are the same, 482 fe for example????

What sound are you looking for?
fordracing65 Mufflers, camshaft profiles, high compression, and even tie bars for hydro roller lifters all can be heard. Motors with Webers when setup right can heard a sound pitch change when they clear out.
Are you looking for a nasty idle, Loud exhaust, or bug killer?? A little more info would help on the noise. Rick l. PS A solid camshaft and hydro roller camshaft don't have the same ramps for the profile and will give the motor a different tone with every else being the same. Hydro are really the way to go. I have run a set of crane hydro roller for 16 years and no problems with high oil pressures. They run like solids if setup with min valve lash.

From a different perspective...
Remember, for most of us, these are just toys. Grown up versions of the Hot Wheels cars we played with as kids. If you look at it that way, then you don't spec your car to squeeze every last ounce of power or performance or mechanical efficiency out of it. I chose the old SFT cam of mine because I like the noise it makes, leather because I like the smell, six-pin drives because I like the looks of them when I pull the wheels. These cars are nothing more than fun little diversions -- just treat them that way.

No, my post is directly on point. FR65 is considering making a decision based on the sound of a component. You only do that with your toys. Fortunately, that's perfectly acceptable here... and I politely pointed that out.

FR65's question is about the sound difference of two types of cams. "You only do that with toys" is off-point.....again.

Actually - I like this comparison. And then you can throw in mild steel tubing headers and end up with.
solids -- tap-ping-harumpa tap-ping-harumpa tap-ping-harumpa
hydraulics -- ping-harumpa ping-harumpa ping-harumpa

IF your question is about why a solid cam has tappet noise where a hydraulic cam is quieter----------The hydraulic lifter is in constant contact with the cam lobe---solid tappets need to have valve lash clearance so the valves will completely close when the engine is cold, and depending on the cam/engine/manufacture will have clearances ranging from around .010 towards .030--------some companies was around .012 to .016 where Ford was I think .019 on Y Blocks and .025-.027 on the FEs------
So the cam wouldn't slap the tappet, cams were ground with a "clearance ramp", an area of the lobe that gradually took up the clearance over a few degrees of cam rotation--the FEs were destntively louder(so much so that Ford Quickly converted to hydraulics in the 332 /352s very early 1958----they identified these hydraulic engines with a spot of orange paint on the left(I think)side of the timing cover----

When Ruthie says come see her
In her honky-tonk lagoon
Where I can watch her waltz for free
’Neath her Panamanian moon
An’ I say, “Aw come on now
You must know about my debutante”
An’ she says, “Your debutante just knows what you need
But I know what you want”
Oh, Mama, can this really be the end
To be stuck inside of Mobile
With the Memphis blues again
Yeah, I'm a Bob Dylan fan too.
But if you really want to hear something, run some solid (flat tappet) lifters on a hydraulic cam! Ah.... those were the good (budget constrained) ole' days...

FR65, IMHO you're right on track. Although I do like the little clickity-clickity sound of solids (I have them in my Boss302), I'm never going to spin my FE to the point where I need them. Therefore I went with a hydraulic roller and I haven't looked back. I think you'll be happy with what Brent builds you.

I was going to suggest you try the hyd roller cam. I just changed to one and the difference in sound if very subtle but noticeable. It's more of a rumble and less of a crack than the flat tappet cam. I like it..
