Benny, I have such a motor rebuilt by KC last August (after a rather dramatic rod bearing failure on the track). New Pond Al FE block, 482 stroker steel crank, H-beam rods, blueprinted oil pump, and 10 qt AVIAID pan. They put in a 242/248/110 roller cam, redid my Edelbrock Stage II heads, Erson roller rockers. It makes 591 hp at 5600 rpm. 604 tq. It has a 750 cfm Holley 4150HP.

Nice mild street motor (compared to some of the 482s). I think the compression is about 10.5:1. But ... these FE's are still beasts, and if you want all the HP/TQ you are talking about, you really don't have a street car. It will be an amusement park ride for sure ;) Suit yourself .. I would not change mine, but do take it to a track before you take it to the canyons **)

Just fyi, mine does not run smoothly below 2000 rpm. So driving at low speeds in parking lots, away from a stop, etc. requires a lot of clutching and reving to keep the motor spun up. It comes up on the cam at about 3000, then it had better be pointed straight! I really could not use any more HP, the tires won't stick in any gear as it is. Soft tread compound is your friend :) No street tires, use Billboards, Avons, or (Nitto NT01's if you have 17" rims). Good luck!

Sam

Sam
Sam that is almost identical to what I ordered. same carb and all. Thanks for the input that is what I'm looking for. Did you have any issues with the breather clearing the hood scoop??

I love the cam spec, which I think is middle of the road, not too big and not too small. I probably could have gone one more notch up to make more HP, but all in all, very happy with the choice.

Rodnock,

Is your cam a hydraulic or solid roller? I'm now selecting a cam for my Shelby stroker (468 or 482 haven't decided yet), and your cam seems to be about right for my Kirkham, mainly street driven but with some track use. However, I want a rough idle and race sounding package so I am leaning towards the shorter stroke engine. I like the idea of the solid roller cam, but I feel it won't live long for street use?:(

I have a hydraulic roller. Tom (Lucas) and I discussed the 468 vs 482, he initially wanted the 468, but I really liked the idea of the "square bore" (4.25x4.25) and the extra 14 cubes. If you want a racier idle, then I'd build a 482 with next step up in cam.

But I will say that I think my choice of engine size and cam is nearly perfect. Idle is plenty racy enough and I had a 540 BBC in a '66 Corvette Convertible. And I'll add the engine exhibits none of the characteristics that Sam has, meaning it's very docile and easy to drive. I say "just about perfect", because I usually want to make things difficult on myself, so there's a very small part of me that thinks that I should have stepped up a notch in cam because my 482 is such a great blend of everything.

BTW, if I had to do it all over again, with the same Shelby block, then I would have opted for the Shelby big bore option and went 511 or whatever cubic inch # that left me with one .030 rebuild. Since that'll never happen anyway. **)

Yes, I have a skinny K&N and the mid riser Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold. It sits up inside the scoop and will rotate around and hit it if it is not tight:

I'm going to hazard a guess and suggest that Sam's issues with getting off the line and low rev driving vs Rodknocks, probably has more to do with the weight of each of their flywheels.
Ill guess that Sam's is a light weight aluminuim job and Rodknocks is a little heavier ;)

Sam, Rodknock what are your flywheel stats please?

Thx

Varmit 04-03-2013 06:36 PM

Well I'm going with an alum.

27# McLeod Al/Steel. It will accommodate a 12" clutch. I once had a Hays 40# steel but I pulled a groin muscle trying to mount it once ... But there are some *light* FWs out there. I think a 14# one exists. Not sure why ...

Also, before someone asks, it is a 3.31:1 axle ratio Jag/ERA IRS and the T-600 .82 o.d.

I use the FE parts list prepared by the Kirkhams for BH/FW/Clutch/PP and I have a McLeod Hyd TOB. 12" clutch w/kevlar pads on the FW side, organic on the PP side.

Dimis, where have you been? I'll give you hint. I love to go with the least amount of weight as possible, so Kirkham, aluminum block, heads, etc., QuickTime bellhousing and I'm looking for magnesium wheels. :)

Answer: aluminum flywheel. :)

Hahaha.
Apologies, but here on Uranus, the moon looks like a black hole.

Incidentally - material may be Alu, but how much does it weigh?

Ps. Have you thought about helium to lighten your wheels till those mag mags get made?

I have a MCL563210, which is 18 lbs.

Don't EVEN get me started on those mag wheels.

Keith Craft 482 specs

I just got a 482 from Keith. My engine sounds like what you are looking for.
Tell Toni to pull up my specs (Coach Mike Lane) and see if they are not what you are looking for. Best of Luck.
Coach Mike

950 quickfuel HP
622 HP and 630 TQ at the flywheel.

Nice and peppy.

It's going to be a long two months. Should have done this last winter, so I could have enjoyed it all summer:CRY:

Varmit 05-30-2013 04:34 PM

While on a cross country road trip, stopped by Keith's shop in Ark. Saw my heads, intake, pistons, cranks and so forth. The block was not yet in. Talked to Tony today the block came in yesterday. They are prepping it this week, and will hopefully get it assembled next week. So probably another two weeks before I can get it installed. Be damn glad when I can twist the key and hear it roar to life......wish me luck!!!!
