New bullet for CSX3170
I lost a roller lifter (axle broke) at the Laguna Seca 50th anniversary Cobra event last year and the rebuild was just completed at Kinetics Racing Engines in Michigan. The new engine has more compression, a cam with more high lift duration, lighter pistons, a much lighter crank, and increased head flow. My goal was to increase top end horsepower and decrease low end torque to help control wheel spin.
Excuse Section: The temperature and humidity in Michigan have been horrendous this past week so my dyno numbers were not what I had hoped for. Although there is an SAE correction factor it seems to project worse numbers when conditions are bad and optimistic numbers when the factors are negative (cold air and good barometric pressure).
To put things in perspective Kinetics recently dynoed a Robert Yates Cup engine that was 850 hp at Yates Shop, the Kinetics dyno showed 805 hp with a peak torque of 566 lb/ft. This was done under much better conditions than we had yesterday. Our inlet air temperature was 89 degrees F with a vapor pressure of .92 . 3170's new bullet made 827 hp @7500 with a peak torque of 642 lb/ft at 5500. Average horsepower from 5500 to 8000 was 764 and average torque was 598 lb/ft from 5500 to 8000, not too bad for a normally aspirated 1950's truck engine. Kinetics estimated that the engine would have a corrected number of around 850 hp under conditions closer to a 0 correction factor.
Next step, install it in the car and put the race suspension back on, should be running sometime in August.

Wow. Over 800 hp from a normally aspirated FE? Is this a cammer? For a wedge head motor, that's startling even if it were a 527. Details would be appreciated

The old engine made 807 under conditions that were close to optimum, when I redynoed it under similar conditions (hot weather and humidity it made about 760 peak and 640 lb/ft.
Head flow is 380 at .800 don't know about .600, ex about 265 the engine is still 498 cid. The big difference is it pulls all the way out the back door where the old one fell off dramatically above 7600. I won't do this but Kinetics said an 8500 shift point would be about right. We took 5 pounds out of the crank and lightened the intake valves (titanium in and ex) along with much better valve springs. I wanted 400 cfm but we could not get there with out sliding the heads over ala Barry R. and I did not want too redo headers and intake so we stopped here. It should be a real animal in the car, the old one was scary on 7 cylinders.

The guys at Kinetic know their poop...
Your heads are very, very close to my EMC high risers in flow - those are based on BT high risers - Chris G has flowed them and can share the data. I have only seen two FE heads that went to 400, and both of those were BT high risers with every trick in the book. that's a long way of saying that yer boys done good!
You have the highest power non-drag race N/A FE that I am aware of anywhere. Very cool indeed.

I have been following this thread, and this new engine seems extremely to dangerous. I think you should give me the car for safe keeping, and you can borrow it, from time to time...

I think you had issues keeping the old mill under noise limits: anything new to keep this one quiet enough?

I really have not addressed that issue yet, I might try a longer muffler body with
larger diameter built by the guys in LA that build mufflers for rotorary's. They are a little on the pricy side but seem to know a lot about sound control.
The American Autox Series has been pretty good about letting me run it although it is loud and Button Willow does not have sound limits that I am aware of. I really need to get out in the garage and finish preping the car for the new engine but it is so damn hot I can't work more than an hour or two in the morning. I have to put on the race suspension, a new oil cooler and replace all the lines that have nasty bits and pieces in them. I have my new wheels but they have to be torqued , siliconed and have tires mounted too.
The car has to be corner weighted and aligned along with everything else. I wish this were early spring, but that is the way it goes.

ac for the shop ?
I thought by now you would have an A/C for the shop. When my wife built her 4 car garage her brother in law had an insulation company . She was up in the attic running the blow in hose and her kids were supposed to be listening and relaying information. to the guy running the insulation truck. She said the insulation just kept getting deeper and deeper, , at about 4 ft it finally stopped. the truck was empty. The concrete block walls are also insulated and when the temp runs from 60 at night to 90 day temp the garage doesn't get over 70.

I would really like that, I am working out of a slightly over sized 3 car garage with bare walls and open ceiling, with two fans it still gets over 100 in there all the time. My engine shipped Friday from Detroit so I have to get off my rear and get the frame cleaned up and ready along with swapping the suspension.
My goal is to be running before the end of August. The subdivision I am in will not allow me to add on to the garage so I am stuck with what I have.
How is health Tim everything ok now?
