Default BlueThunder heads and Cobra side pipes

I finally got me a FE motor... I chickened out on building my own. I will post pictures in another thread.... I did get it off the FE forum
Anyway.. it has Blue Thunder heads and I have been told that Cobra 4 into 4 headers wont work because of the raised ports. Is this true, if so amd I screwed. I guess the Factory 5 cut outs are the same placement as everybody elses.

Screwed? No.
But you will need custom headers done.

Congrats on the engine.
Post some build specs.

probably right, it won't work without modifications, but hey, its only money. I have a similar set of Dove HR raised exhaust port heads that are waiting for an application.

If its .400 of an inch higher... how many people would notice if you dremel out the cuts upward by that much. Heck, thats less then 1/2 inch.

I am now being told that the steering shaft may be in the way also...
Options I am thinking of..
Taking a standard set of headers and using a sawzall, cut about 80% through the pipes right at the header flange, bend the pipes down whatever amount needed. the take some pipe and cut "wedges" and weld back in to where I made the cuts.... clear as mud uh...
I did email Stainless Steel headers to see what they said.

This is one reason we do not use the Blue Thunder heads in this application. The builder should have known that this would have been a problem for you. I have told Blue Thunder they needed a head with a stock exhaust location. Something that needs to be considered when designing an engine for a customer that can save a lot of trouble down the road. The performance difference if any is sure not worth the trouble.

Good luck, Keith

Dove told me that the high exhaust ports really only benefit in all out normally aspirated, or supercharged applications.

Once upon a time, I used a set of aftermarket heads with raised exhaust ports, but fortunately I'm (was) located near a custom header & exhaust shop, which was operated separately (but next to) by an employee of Sanderson Headers in South San Francisco.

I thought it was money well spent anyway. "Mass produced" headers aren't always well-made.

Al ... Calvin Elston is just South of Charlotte ( Monroe ) and fabricates custom exhausts for everyone from the dirt boys to NASCAR . Did a friend of mine`s Roush Trans Am cars from scratch and put merged collectors and Coast racing mufflers on mine ( 5 lbs each ) .

His web site is Elston Exhaust ... superb work , but expensive , or maybe not if it works and looks professional . He also posts occasionally on Speedtalk in the members only section . If interested , I have his phone number .
