First start up

My engine has been re-built, and the cam run-in. Its then been stood for a couple of years since then (life got in the way), but I am making some final prep for first start-up.

Obviously I need to fill up the fluids and prime the oil via the distributor.
Any words of wisdom please, general or FE specific?

Are you planning to run it in the car or on an engine stand?

Have a little gas to supplement the first few strokes to dribble into the carb. with the butterfly held open.

Either way make sure you see oil pressure from the Distributor drive, the timing should be set in the middle (with the twist of the distributor, enough air flow into the radiator (fans), turn the engine over a few times with out the ignition reconnect the ignition ( Center wire to the distributor for the coil)....kick the tires and light the fires.

If you have a laser temperature gun , measure the temp of each of the exhaust header outputs to make sure all eight are firing.

Assuming you have a Holley or derivative of one, they are very easy to fill the primary fuel bowl before firing. A plastic condiment bottle with a tip on it makes it easy to fill the bowl by squirting it down the vent on top. When you start to see a few dribbles falling on the throttle plate it's time to stop. If timing is close it should start pretty much immediately.
