Get a kit
Truetriplex If you want the best way, get a whole kit.
You know he needs a flywheel, get aluminum 22 pound aluminum against 40#
Bell housing, make sure it is centered to the block
clutch fork
Depending on what way you want to go, need a master and slave cylinders
You can goto a hydro throwout bearing assembly.
Correct pilot bushing for the trans input shaft, Measure for correct length
Lakewood bellhousing are alot bigger and heavier. I run them in all my cars, trucks, jeeps and friends cars. Everybody has all their toes and legs.
Quicktime sell a lighter bellhousing and is SEFI certified for a 28 pound flywheel. Not sure if it was certified for a 40 pound FE flywheel.
New clutch assembly
New pedal assembly
Drive shaft may need to be shorten or lengthen and balanced
Res tank for fluid. You can share this from the brake system fluid
Pedal stop for under the clutch pedal
You may have to build a rod linkage for the clutch assembly
Clutch will depend on the HP and Toruqe of this motor. We have no info for power. Stock will work fine for a stock or even higher HP motor. You can get a reman cheap in 11" or 11.5"
You will need to check out the bolt patterns on the flywheel. Some have 3 patterns for which clutch to use.
With good knowledge this job is an 6-8 hours on a lift. DON'T cheat the bellhousing centering part and the measurement of input shaft. Wrong location and too deep a shaft will damage the motor and prewear out the thrust bearing in the motor.
If you go with Quicktime, their bellhousing are pretty close to center on the block, you may still have to buy a set of bellhousing alignment pins. They come in .007" and .014" range. The other way is to grind out all the holes on the bell and center it that way. Far you have center, weld 2 nuts on the bellhousing the fit tight over the alignment pins. This way you can remove and reinstall bell and it is still centered. NO WELDING wth the battery hooked up.
Lakewood bellhousing takes more work. MIne was .038" out and took 3 hours to center. Pain in the A$$.
Other side notes, Bolts for bell housing, Get Allen head bolts7/16" and thick washers. Bolts 1.5" long. These are easier to install the a normal bolt.
Here your other pain in the butt, Starter engagement. Bellhousings come with block plates to protect block incase of clutch explosion. The problem is they are about .250" thick and you need to modify it to get complete gear to gear engagement of the starter to the flywheel. This is a whole other pain in the butt. Some people goto a mini starter. The starter case or the block plate need to be modified to get the starter to have a complete engagement. Other wise you only have about 1/2 a teeth to teeth contact. This perwears out the flywheel teeth ring and the starter bendix.
Wiring for a park/neutral switch. Also adding a speedo cable to the trans and needing a 90 degree adapter.
Last note, If you or your friend want to install a manual trans and keep the power ratings down, look into an overdrive one like a tko 500 or tko 600 if you are going to add more power to the car with a stronger motor or even stroke the one you have. In the long run this will be cheaper. You can get a shifter handle that bolts to theses trans and looks 100% originial. Overdrive is great for cruising down the highways and saves gas and the motor life. Less rpms, easier wear and tear.
Good luck with your project. Shoot some pictures. Rick L.
You know the cost is going to be about $1,000.00 for the basic swap and more for the better setup.
