My theory is to just keep torquing it down until either 1) your arm gets too tired to crank it anymore, or 2) something breaks. If it's the latter, just view it as an opportunity to upgrade to something better and chalk it up to whatever broke as probably needing to be replaced anyway.

Thanks Lippy, interesting reading for sure, still very confusing though!
Phil, I will probably be removing the carb to Torque these things properly. Sucks that I just put it on 1 week ago :>(

One of my mates did this a lot, so I bought him a short spanner set for his birthday one year.

In the states we call those "stubbies." I have a nice set of them and they are, for a fact, my "go to" wrenches on just about everything. I only break out the larger wrenches after I have bruised and exhausted my hand.;)

David,
It's not a bad job. If you have the gaskets and pipe thread sealant for the fuel log to car connections, it's a pretty easy job. You should get it running and drive it to Columbus Ohio for the London show in a few weeks. There are just over 108 cars showing up.

Same here - I have a couple and usually grab one for tightening up valve cover and pan bolts and the such. I grab it around the center with my palm to further limit the amount of torque I can effectively apply through it. I can twist on it firmly and probably never apply more than 10 - 12 lb ft torque. Very easy to modulate force.

What is not a bad job? My fuel log just picks up on two of manifold bolts on the pass side. Pipe sealant?
I hear that show is awesome and one day I would love to go!

Dan,
I have a whole set of those wrenches, they are about 3" long right? Just the opposite for me though. I only use then when I absolutely have to. 10-12 on a valve cover won't work for me at all. Because there is not much leverage here, I always am afraid because of how much force it feels that I am applying. I try and finish off everything thing with a torque wrench. I just cant help myself:D

For the life of me I cannot find a 3/8 drive, 12 point, 3/8 crows foot. Every other freakin size but 3/8. So frustrating!
He must have received the two 12 points bolts with the fuel log because all the other manifold bolts are 6 point.
Does any body think I could get away with a 1/4 drive crows foot? Could it take 25 ft lbs without breaking it or the 3/8 drive to 1/4 adapter I am going to have to use on my torque wrench to step down the drive. I think they shear pretty easily.

David,
I only meant that the intake gasket was the easier thing to do from the last job I did on mine which was replace head gaskets. Mine looks like this with the fuel log in the same place. The key part is marking the location of the distributor with the #1 cylinder at TDC. That will save some time when it goes back together.

Oh, now I understand! Beautiful engine Phil. that is the exact setup I would like to have. I love the look of dual carbs. Unfortunately for me, it costs a lot, but fortunately, I also like the Turkey pan look that I have..... except it can be a PITA at times.

No Ted, I need the short version of what this is. I would call this a "dogbone".
I have found what I want in every size but 3/8. they also have a open version which they are calling "flare". I don't know if the open version can take 25 ft lbs though?

Yes, like that or the closed version. if you look at that, it starts at 5/8 not 3/8. I also don't want a whole set or spend that kind of money

David,
Ya, I knew the item I posted wasn't a crows foot but thought it would do what you needed. Anyway, hope you find what you're looking for.

David,
Yours is very nice as well. The turkey pan looks clean enough to eat off of! Turkey on a turkey pan sounds good right now! (:

Thanks Ted, appreciate it.
It wont even work with the carb off, it is to long and will hit the little runners adjacent to the bolt. If the fuel log was not there, I would have a lot more room to work...it would probably work because I could hit it from a different angle
