Default side oiler harmonic balancer

Hi, I have a 1966 427 with aluminum pulley V-belt set up. All the pulleys match except for the harmonic balancer which is steel. Normally the pulley is bolted to the balancer but all I have is one large center bolt. I do have a 428 crank. I want to replace my balancer and lower pulley but I cant find the one that will work. Any suggestions?

I am FAR from an FE expert!...but I do recall reading somewhere here on the forum that the 428 crank does use some different parts. It was related to balancing, IIRC...and could well have been related to the flywheel needed to balance a 428 crank?

Could the 428 crank and the corresponding attachments be your issue.....?

Wish my memory were better, but the world of FEs is, for me at least, a sort of mystical, magical place where things don't always make sense.

Some pics of what you have would help. A lot of FE's used the outer ring of the balancer with a v-belt groove, if your balancer is like this with a keyway for crank snout in ID then that is what you have with one large bolt/washer in center to fit crankshaft. However if as you say you have a 428 crank in a 427 block then I would assume or suggest that whoever built the engine will have taken into consideration that the whole assy should be balanced as the 428 crank would have been externally balanced, whereas the 427 crank is internal/neutral balance.
If your looking to mount more alloy pulleys on the crank then you will probably have to figure out a means of attaching them to the crank damper. If the engine is still in the build phase and not been balanced or completed yet you may be able to change the balancer to a later version with pulley bolt holes. Bear in mind the FE crank snout sticks out front some distance and adding more pulleys etc at that point puts extra load on the crank snout, In some cases I have mounted extra drive pulleys in the area between damper & front seal where the spacer fits...about 2" of space sitting there unused.

The 427 is internally balanced and the 428 is externally balanced.

Did you buy a aluminum pulley set for a 427 crankshaft?

Sounds like you need a pulley set for the 428.
