Default No casting number 427 date 2 l 17

I need help trying to figure out what type of 427 engine I have. I was told it was a side oiler but I’m not familiar with the 427’s. This engine came with a 1967 Mustang S code 390 car that I had purchased some time ago. It’s missing the carburetors but have a factory 67 Shelby GT500 C7ZX-9425-A intake manifold. It has screw in freeze plus and a 427-26 casting inside the engine block. The caring date appear to be a 2 L 17. Thanks

A side oiler will have a pipe plug in the front of the block. It is above the oil pan and outside the timing cover on the driver side. This plug covers the hole where the oil galley along the side of the block was drilled. If you have this plug, it is a side oiler. If you don’t, it is either a center oiler or top oiler.

Chris, here is picture of the engine block. Thanks for the info. Not really sure about anything else since I can’t find any other numbers other than the date casting. I’ll look closely again. These pictures were taken by the former owner before the engine was put together. I’ll look again once I have taken it out for a complete inspection. I think the intake manifold was an add on since the block appears to be a late 1962 block. Thanks

I can't tell from the picture but on a side oiler you should have a small rib running along the drivers side I think it is and down low on the side of the block. That would be the oil passage.

Marine or irrigation block. Not a side oiler. Bill.

Likely 1972, not 1962. Service block or industrial application.

Many more 427s were made for Ford Industrial Engines (now "Power Products" than were EVER made for cars! LOTS of 427s went into inboard boats and watch out as if it was a twin, the second motor was reverse rotation!

The bottom pic in post #3 is quite interesting. The block appears to be a side oiler casting that was not drilled for side oiler oil delivery.

The oil galley bulge along the side of the block above the side bolts is clearly visible in the bottom pic of post #3. It appears that Ford ran the cutter for the engine mount boss machining operation deeper than normal to cut into the casting provisions for the oil channel. Above each side bolt you can see some or all of the associated boss that would have been drilled to the main saddle for oil delivery.

Quite an interesting block! Perhaps it was from the end of a side oiler casting run and the factory was producing top or center oilers for say industrial applications? It is possible someone made the decision to machine it as a regular block not withstanding its side oiler casting heritage for expedience instead of using the non side oiler casting ...
