Default Expansion Tank Fitment

Okay, we are getting close to firing up the SO for the first time. We just got the expansion tank from ERA and I tried to loosely mount it on the intake. It looks like the back of the tank is going to hit the distributor (electronic Ford distributor). Has anyone else had problems in this area? I think a small spacer would move it out enough, but not sure if we would run into problems with leaks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ike-
I know other people have had the same problem using MSD distributors and have fashioned spacers to solve the problem. Pat Buckley is one that I remember said that he had that problem. If you do a search you should be able to find at least one or two different threads discussing this problem. If you can't find it, send Pat an email and I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you what he did to fix it.

Get that thing started already, it's the middle of May already, what are you waiting for?

Ike,

I use the MSD Pro Billet distributor with the expansion tank I got from ERA. It is very close but fits and I still have enough room to set the distributor timing without problems.

We've been waiting for the tank for about a month and a half, plus, my dad and I only work on it when I come home from school (not sure how he can resist). Now that I am home for the summer though, it's only a matter of days!!! I would like to get video, but we don't really have a good camera, I will definitely get sound though, and that's all you need!!

Definitely do a search on this topic. I asked similar questions a few months ago. As I recall, MSD has several different caps that fit their FE distributor. One needs to procure the smallest cap. Of course you'll need an MSD dist...

On your Motorcraft dist., try turning the distributor body a few degrees one way or the other and see if that makes some room. Rearrange the plug wires to maintain proper firing order and timing.

If you can find a junkyard puke tank, you can salvage the mounting plate that attaches to the intake manifold for a spacer. Should provide about 3/4" extra room.

I had the same problem too. Brass is a great conductor and the proximity of my pulg wires to the tank was causing one of them to arc to the tank.

I resolved it by taking a pry bar and gently bending the tank forward enough to clear the distributor.

Be careful if you do this as you can crack the thermostat housing on your intake if you get too agressive.

Note also that if you move the tank forward with a spacer don't forget that the rake of the hood gets greater in that area and you can have clearance issues.

You'll find the bigest "clearance issue" will be with your check book

But hey, you can't take it with you.

For those of you who installed a flange, did you buy it (if so where) or did you make it. My dad just got an acetylene welder, MIG welder and a small plasma cutter, so I feel like making something.
