Default good advise

Just a little advise on mechanical fuel pumps for an FE.
I went through the song & dance on installing a Holly mechanical fuel pump for my 427. To begin with the holly has too much pressure. (8-9lbs) for street. It is advertised to have 5.5-6.5lbs. Then the first day on the road (about 50 miles) with my skeptical 8 year old in the car my holly sucks the diaphragm in and we were lucky the car did not catch fire. Had to catch a ride home and return to repair the car.
Took the Holly apart and fixed the diaphragm but did not address the high pressure issue.
Ordered a Carter from summit. I have heard that the Carter is supposed to be the best mechanical pump for the FE. HA HA HA LOL.
I installed the Carter and it seemed to run fine in my garage¡K So I take my 8 year old skeptical son again for a ride¡KOne exit down on the freeway and boom the car seems to run out of fuel.
I barely limp home by this time my son NEVER wants to ride in this LOUD broken down car again and I am bummedƒ¼ My whole time building this car I am looking forward to my son having fun but ¡K.
I take the Carter pump apart only to find a 3/8¡¨X3/8¡¨ piece of scrap foam rubber inside my NEW fuel pump¡K Install the pump again and it seems to run fine¡K
THANKS CARTER & HOLLY ¡K..
PIECE OF SHI$
To sum up.
My advice is to any one installing a new Holly or Carter mechanical fuel pump in there new $20K +/- motor is to completely disassemble the pump on the bench and check it out¡K They need it!!! If I half to do this again I will go electric
