Default 427 S.O. ID Numbers

Hi guys........

I'm curious if there is a way to identify some numbers on the block while the engine is in the car. It sounds dumb, but I have a side oiler, and I'm trying to identify the year of the block...unless the originals were only produced for 1-year? I was also told that the service block had ribs on the block. If anyone has pics to easily identify the diff between the two.....and where the stamp markings would be on the block for ID purposes.

Thanks guys......I've been a BB Chevy nut for too many years...now a devoted FE guy!

Bill..
Here's a couple of quick checks you can do...

If the block was an original "car" block.. it will have a Cxxx-x part number cast in the side...(left in pic below)

...there is usually a date code plate (like "year-month-day") near the Oil Filter attach point.

Service blocks ( "replacement parts" block) had the ribbings.

Ron...

Thanks for the pics. I'll be checking the numbers tomorrow.
