Fixit, I got to try the old keep cranking thing when I replaced the dist and it backfired up through the carb. I had one hand cranking the starter and the other rotating the dist to get it timed close enough to start. It was a long few seconds.

I did something like that when I was 16. Trying to start my freshly rebuilt 396 (my first engine rebuild) and it kept backfiring through the carb. In a fit of 16 year old genius, I looked down through the carb while cranking it to see if fuel was flowing, and it was. Flowing straight up in a vapor cloud, around my head, on fire. I lost my eyebrows and looked a little funny for a while.
