Alternators ????
HEY, GUYS,
I'M LOOKING FOR AN ALTERNATOR FOR MY 427 S/O.
IT'S A SMALL FRAME FORD (CASTING NUMBER 13).
I NEED THE SMALL FRAME BECAUSE OF THE (OBVIOUS) SERIOUS SPACE LIMITATIONS.
I'D LIKE TO GET SOMETHING WITH ABOUT A 95 AMP OUTPUT WITH 30 AMPS AT 1500 RPM. - - - OR AS CLOSE AS I CAN GET TO THAT.
I TRIED THE ARCHIVES - BECAUSE I'M SURE THE TOPIC MUST HAVE COME UP BEFORE BUT FOR SOME REASON (PROBABLY MY BEING "TECHNO-CHALLENGED") I CAN'T ACCESS THE ARCHIVES.
ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

Just a suggestion, but if you already have an alternator that will fit, then you could do what I did. I took my stock one in and had the insides replaced with a 100 Amp insides and everything has worked great for six years. We tested it 4 months ago and it still will put out the full 100 amps. That way I didn't have to go to the big, oversized ones they have in the auto stores around here.

Ron has a point, the guts may fit with little or no effort. Provided you have one that is currently the right size.

95 amps? Why do you need such a high output? 60-65 amp alternators are easy to come by and I would think that would do for just about any Cobra application.

I'D SETTLE FOR A 65 AMP UNIT BUT WOULD PREFER THE 90-95 AMP IN ORDER TO GET 50 -60 AT LOWER RPM.
MY FANS DRAW 30 AMPS - ADD TWO FUEL PUMPS (ONLY USE ONE AT A TIME) - 55 WATT HEADLIGHTS (EACH) AND 100 WATT DRIVING LIGHTS (EACH) AND HEATED SEATS FOR THE WINTER. IT GETS COLD IN DC AND I NEVER PUT THE TOP ON. AT STREET RPM'S IT'S MARGINAL. I SUGGESTED ONLY HEATING THE DRIVERS SEAT (FOR POWER CONSUMPTION PURPOSES) AND MY FRIEND SAID "THAT'S COOL - - AS LONG AS I'M DRIVING".

Try using a smaller pulley. I had the same problem and ended up using a pulley that was a quarter of an inch smaller and it cured the problem. If your running a underdrive pulley it will turn the alternator slower and you lose a lot of amperage at idle.

I'M USING A 2.5 INCH PULLY NOW. I NEED THIS FOR THE ADDITIONAL REASON OF BELT CLEARANCE AT THE BRACKETS.
MAIN REASON FOR CHANGE OF ALTERNATORS AT THIS TIME IS THAT THE CURRENT ALT. QUIT.

What you are looking for is a ford small case 7078 alternator, it is the only one that will fit without modification. Tuff stuff makes them in chrome or painted in 70 and 100 amp and also 1 wire. If you go to their web site you can find them. Jegs has them in stock. Even with the 100 amp they still idle at the same amperage Mine is a 65amp chrome alternator that ive been running for years (rebuilt once). I was going to get a new one for more amperage but before I did I took it to the shop and had them check it out. It put out 55amps at 2200rpm aternator speed. which was more than enough at idle. thus I went to a 2 5/16 pulley and have had no trouble since.

BJ - you might want to stop by Artie's Auto Electric and see if he can rebuild it using higher amp "guts".
