427 ID Question

Spoke with a local salvage yard today and he advised he had a couple of Ford 427 engines? Unkown years or condition at this time, and I am unsure if these are complete or just the blocks. I am going ou there to look and possibly get one if it turns out to be true. What ID markings should I look for to determine it is a true Ford 427. Would not want to come home with a 427 that turned out to be something else. Also what is a good price for a solid block?

Any help and info on ID'ing will be greatly appreciated.

Look for cross bolted main caps, and pipe plugs above the main cap side bolts....If the heads are off, check the bore size....should be about 4.23".....

First thing I would do is inquire as to how he obtained these 427's,the odds of a true 427 showing up in a salvage yard ,much less two,,is nearly impossible,,I'm curious to see where this goes,,Tim

Salvage yard is probably not the right word to describe this place. It is a "backwoods" car junkyard (around 10-15 acers). I do not know if these engines are still in cars , out or are just blocks. Hell, I don't even know if they are 427s. I was hoping to find some sort of numbers on the block to determine their true identity as I am no engine expert.

There are no numbers that will tell you if it is a 427, you will have to check the bore.

More accurate to say "numbers" vary from block to block, no definite order to the madness.

Interesting to note that MY 427 actually has cast into the block just about the lifter holes the numbers: "427"

I've never heard of anyone else mentioning that in reference to a side oiler.

I would say first hunt for the cross bolts at the mains and go from there,,the 427's without cross bolts are so rare ,,but you never know,GOOD LUCK !!,Tim
