Question 427 top oiler core...

I found a 1964 C4AE-A in a warehouse the other day. The heads are C3AE-J. The guy thought it was a side oiler and said he wanted $5k for it, says it is std / std. Without tearing it down (I will as a condition of sale). What do you suppose it's worth as a core? It's complete with an automatic flex plate single carb aluminum ford intake.

Thanks,

Around $4000 if it's a really good core engine and matching numbers. The last C4 427 I looked at was $3000. It was a low mile all original engine but missing the original carb, intake and dizzy. Complete other than that. The aluminum 1x4 lowrisers sell for $400-500 in good shape. The original carb close to the same and the C3 dual point dizzys $100-200. $5000 is a little steep but someone will pay it looking for the correct topoiler for an R code Gal. How original is everything? G.

Yea I'm sure this isn't the original carb and with a plain jane 4v intake I'm inclined to err on the side of caution. I feel bad the guy thought it was a SO. If it was I'd probably give him the $5k but as it sits I'm thinking $3000-3500 max.

I hadn't thought about the distributor. I'll look at it. So far it seems pretty numbers matching. I'll verify the date codes prior but it looks like the C3AE-J heads (improved cylinder design) were late enough to have come on the C4 block. The C4 is also suppose to be the first with the $ cross drilled steel crank. How nice would that be to get a crank that only needed polishing.

I'm actually looking for it for myself. I've been putting together parts for a 1967 S code Mustang build I want to do. I was actually looking in the local newspapers for the car when I found this. I have a 1966 428 and a 1967 428 block and heads, intakes, small parts alreay collected. I may be having a garage sale if I get this one. Better to keep it all together and rebuild it.

It should have the split iron rocker stands also on the heads unless they have been replaced. Pretty sure they were lowrisers also. Depending how early 64 it is it might still have the iron crank as stock. Steel would be a nice bonus however. Sounds like an ok deal for $3000 or so. See if he will partial trade for one of the 428's. Check the block for cloverleaf cyls also through the freeze plugs if possible. Have you found a mustang yet?? G.

Oh FWIW the early stock aluminum oem intakes lots of times will not have a casting number. Just the firing order and maybe the Ford oval logo so take a good look. G.
