Thanx 4 your timely replies guys. The edsel thing is weird being that it's from the 40's-late 50's! Correct me if I'm wrong though? I've been stumped on this matter 4ever!

the basic design of the FE was introduced in the Edsel. yes, these engines have been around a long time.

Edsel came out in 1958

According to Jim Dove the term FE means Fairlane Engine. Go to the Dove Engines site and poke around and you will find lot's of info on the FE engines and other neat Ford stuff.

FE was the rather unloved and forgotten MEL motor. The MEL (Mercury/Edsel/ Lincoln) appeared around the same time as the FE and was used in the higher end Edsels, Mercurys, and Lincolns. MEL's soldiered on until the late 60's in 430/462 form powering the big Lincoln boats until the "385" series supplanted both FE's and MEL's. ....Fred |
The first explanation I ever got from a Ford source was Ford/Edsel to differentiate them from the MEL engines, but I read recently that some current engineers at Ford checked the records and the first mention of the family was Ford Engine. Looks like Ernie's right. :D

I'm in for the Fairlane Engine . The Fairlane started in 58 and was the full sized car of that time the FE series in 58 started as 332 cu.in. then 352 the hot factory engine in 61 was a 360 HP 352. In 61 became a 390 401HP , 62 406cu.in. 410 HP 63 427 cu.in. 425HP then the side oiler427 then in 66 the428 was available as an all out alternative to the 427.The 428 takes it's own dampener and flywheels( auto or manual).

"FE" was the abrieviated term for the orginal Ford "farm engine". These engines were not originally designed for passenger car applications.

Ford estate on N. Evergreen Road in Dearborn. They chose that name because Henry Ford's foster grandfather came from "Fair Lane," an area of County Cork, Ireland. Ford president at the time, Ernest Breech seemed to be obsessed with all things "Ford" and probably chose the name because of its association with Ford family. Breech was also responsible for the "Edsel" name and chose it despite objections from the Ford family and Ford marketing people who thought is wasn't a good name for a car line. ....Fred |
I have heard many but I read Fairlane Engine in several well known reference manuals including Ford Total Perfomance , But ...... If you ever build one for racing you will be convinced it stands for Fu..ing Expensive as mentioned in the begining

"Farm Engine"??? What the he..... :D No way!

Some say "Finally Extinct"
others say "f*&%*&g Expensive" Paul |

" A careful search of the FoMoCo Engineering archives by currently employed engineers shows that the earliest references to the engine group made reference to 'Ford/Edsel and very soon that was shortened to F/E. Ultimately the designation was simplified to FE" |
