Default 427 SO Cam specs.

What were the original 427 SO cam specs. That is probably the cam I would want for a flat tappet engine. My car has 3:31 rear with wr top loader.
Anyone know?

Very fuzzy on this but I think lift around .500 and only an advertised duration (not @.050) figure around 308 deg symetrical.
I'm probably wacky 'cause CRS...
Ron or the other experts can give you the molecular structure of the cam probably.

Mike, I heard your car run at Sals. That is a nasty sounding cam you have. Can I ask if you got h.p. numbers when it was done and what they were? Are you thinking about changing the cam in that motor? Ed

Original cam: C3AZ-6250-AA, .500 @ 306 with 78 degrees overlap. Lash .025 hot.
Next up: C4AE-6250-B, .500 @ 324 with 112 degrees overlap. Lash .025 hot
Next up: C8AX-6250-D, .600 @ 330 with 116 degrees overlap. Lash .25 hot

Biggest hyd from Ford for an FE:
C8AX-6250-C, .500 @ 282 I / 296 E with 58 degrees overlap. Lash, hyd.

These were the largest cams available from Ford for a 427. The C3AZ-AA cam was the only standard production cam. The others were over the counter.
You can purchase solid cams that are very similar from Holman-Moody.

Default Cam in my car

Cobra Ed,
The car produced 388 rear wheel horsepower on Sal's Dyno.Torque came in at 3000 rpm. 425 ft lb. That is too much.The engine was built by Tony Carey here on Long Island who is an excellent builder. Problem is the engine idled at 1300 rpm and was not easy to drive for me. To make a long story short. I had some other work done and the cam changed by Joe Lapine n Danbury CT who is also an excellent builder because Tony has no real space to work. Joe put in a cam profile that was pretty close to the original and I think it is great/ .524 valve lift/ 324 adv deg duration/ 245 dur @50deg. Cam is a flat tappet as was the old one. 114deg.cl. Yes much milder. Driveability: Much better. Low end torque: "like a freight train"! AND IT IDLES @ 850rpm. O.K. the car does not shake anymore but the 427bb sound is still there!
Running Scat crank stroked to 468 cu. in. Holley 830 cfm nascar carb. Joe said if I cut it back to a 750 it might even be better. Joe told me I probably have around 450-460 engine horsepower.

You may be correct, however I would need to see some part numbers and specs. The C3AZ in the part number means 63, full size production. I worked for ford and saw several brand new 63's and up that never had anything larger from the factory. Again, you may be correct, show me some numbers.

Mike, I'm guessing you have Crane #340321. They describe it as a "Replacement for Factory 425HP, 427 Cu. In. Camshaft." The specs are pretty close to what you describe. I am curious though, do you know at what advance Joe installed your cam? Was it at, say, 5 degrees advance, 6 degrees advance, etc.?

Advancing or retarding the cam moves the power band up or down. Not by a whole lot but by hundreds of RPMs. Advancing gives you more bottom end and retarding gives you more top end. There's no free lunch though, gaining at one end means losing at the other. A scan of the cam card would be nice as well if Joe happens to have it (just in case I'm wrong and it's a custom grind).

Without bothering Joe, I looked at the spec. sheet he gave me. He set timing at 34 deg. @ 4000 rpm. 6 deg. advance. What do you think? He wrote the cam ICL to be 109.

You have a nice mild cam with a little extra advance to help on the lower end. With all the cubic inches you have I think that's a very nice street set up. You can do further tweaking by experimenting with your valve lash by little bits. With aluminum heads he probably spec'd your lash at something around .018 COLD. Adjusting your lash a little outside of that amount (either more lash or less lash) will act like advancing or retarding (meaning you get a little boost at the high end, or the low end, but not both).
