Call me a dummy
Ok call me a dummy but whats the deal with High riser Med riser etc heads?
I have a 427 so and some (what look to be) stock heads...I think my bottle neck is the heads and intake ...I am running a holy street dominator i do believe as the intake with a holly 750 ..I am not very impressed with the heads or the intake? thoughts ? what are you 427 side oiler guys running for heads and intakes? I know broad question but any help is great Thanks |

Seriously, buy this book.
http://www.themotorbookstore.com/howtorebifoe.html It has good descriptions of all the FE heads, except the SOHC. Tunnel ports flow the best of the original. Modern FE heads are based off of the MR and HR design, but with redesigned ports on some of the heads for better flow. |

I am in the process of assembling a 427 s.o. with Ford medium riser heads, Ford dual quad intake. From what I have gathered the set-up should be quite respectable (450+hp hopefully). Keith Craft is going to assemble for me and I will let you know.
I am going to use two 600cfm Holley's, solid lifters, stock LeMans connecting rods and the steel crank has been slightly modified to produce a longer stroke. |
Medium Riser heads are very respectable. High Riser heads are even better. Don't forget the Tunnel Ports either!
High Risers were outlawed by NASCAR in 1965 and were called the "Tall and Terrible" heads (tall BIG ports). I'm running a set of original 1964 Tall and Terribles on my side oiler (with dual four barrels no less). :D |

By far the biggest limiting factor of the FE motor is cylinder head design. A few companies have figured out how to make them work - Edelbrock is one. If you need to stick to iron heads for authentic looks, you need to have bigger valves as well as porting to make them flow almost as well as a stock big-block Chevy.:rolleyes:
It gets expensive real quick to modify iron heads. Modern aluminum aftermarket heads are much more bang for the buck. Maybe paint the aluminum heads or something. |
I'm not sure Edelbrock has figured out FE heads. :D Out of the box there not that good. With some port work there MUCH better. But hey, if you gotta do port work to make them work, well, thats not exactly 'figured out'.

Is the BORE of a 390 same as the 428? The smaller bores limit valve size. For instance the 427 BLOCK itself is notched to accomodate bigger valves.

The 390 bore is smaller, but 428CJ sized valves fit without notching the bores.
