Anybody painted their Alum. heads or block?
All,
I am thinking of painting my Edelbrock heads for my FE to make the heads less obvious. The motor is going in an original Shelby. Has anyone had any problem with painting aluminum heads or blocks? What type of prep/primer should be used? I am going for an original look as much as possible.

Obviously, I can't speak for everyone, but "you" spend the extra money for the aluminum heads and/or block, you generally want to show it/them off. Also, painted engine components may not have that "as new" look after a few heat cycles.

We "hide" aluminum heads quite often. Eastwood sells a great high heat primer as well as several correct engine colors.

I talked with Keith @ Keith Craft about this in detail when I ordered my Pond 482" motor from him. He strongly recommended against any painting or coating on aluminum blocks, (I don't see why that same thinking wouldn't apply to heads either?). The increased rate of expansion with aluminum causes pieces of paint to delaminate and "pop" off, sometimes in large sections, hence my bare bottomed FE.  The discussion with Kieth started with asking for a Glyptol (SP?) coating for the Pond's lifter valley..

I guess maybe that heads won't expand/contract as much as a block, as the wall thickness is greater, so maybe the paint will stick.
Hmmm....food for thought.
Anybody else with first-hand experience on this?

Ceramic coat them. NIC industries has a great air dry system with several different colors. Good to 1500 F and clean up is a real snap when its dirty, even valve cover leaks on to the exhaust flanges. WD-40 even beads up. I didn't go for a blue, satin silver look is what I was after on the heads. Very pleased for a "do it at home" job. 800 miles and it still looks just like it did when I sprayed it on. I've done several other components now with great results and durability. This stuff is tough, really tough.

THAT is the only pump driven mechanical fan I have seen on a Big Block Cobra.

I like the looks, and it does keep the heat down in the engine compartment. Shroud (sp) in the works to clean up the looks more.
RD duel fan up front.

I painted my Edelbrock heads regular old Ford blue engine paint a year ago, no issues. You know how the paint burns off the exhaust flanges on iron heads? Doesn't happen on aluminum ones, I guess because of the better heat dissipation.
