Default Making Rousch 427SR EFI How to do?

I have a Rouch 427SR currently with a Holley carburator. What I would like to do is make the engine EFI. Rouch sells a kit, installed it would probably be about 9k, is there an alternative that is cheaper and just as reliable/effective? Thanks

Alternatives? Plenty! Cheaper? Oh yea. Many are less than half that price. Are they as good and as complete? I don't know.

Some names
Holley
Fast
MassFlow
Maybe a dozen more.

There is a thread right in this section that the fellow asked us to take a look at a video they did on a very interesting system. Look around and do some searches. You should find some interesting stuff.

I also have a Roush 427 sr/tw - Jerry at Suncoast cobra is currently converting mine to EFI - Dynatek.

I suggest you give him a call - he is very positive towards Dynatek... in fact he is converting his own cobra as well

My total price is approx $9' fully polished 8 stack, installed , tuned and dynoed

The *ford* Lighting EFI intake is available as well as all the support parts.

-- I would start with a 60LB injector and MAF.

-- you would need to tune it, but damn sure it would work.

Have you planned your cars fuel system >?

the baffle in the tanks , high pressure pumps>?

Fortunatly, aftermarket EFI seems to be exploding right now. 5-8 years ago, choices were very limited, and very expensive. The software was difficult to work with, and people really struggled to get it running right.

Flash foreward to 2010. EFI is (relativly) inexpensive, easy to install, and reliable. For example, the Dynatech kit. Cheap for an 8 stack system, killer looks, and self tuning. Also take a look at the Boss EFI system. Bolts on like a carb, self tuning, and for a lot less than $9K.

I drove a SPF with a Roush 427R that had been switched from a carb motor to an 8 stack set-up. The power curve seemed IMO to be screwed up. I was told that a different cam was used in the carb motor. Something to think about...

That is very true, low vacuum motors (radical) cams flip out the MAP sensors and the knock sensors (if used)

My idea-

E303, 1.7 Rockers, check for valve bind, advance cam 2 to 4 degrees and tune and look the F out.

You can get an EFI system to work well with a "big" cam - low vacuum signal and all. IMO, a big cam with a low vacuum signal is perfect for EFI. You don't have to worry about maintaining port velocity so much. Some, but not as much.

An 8 stack system (carb or EFI) works better with a cam that has a larger LSA, like 114*-115*. That prevents the reversion you usually see in the carb/TB throats.

A big engine with a big cam and heads can idle quite niceley at 800rpm's, cruise down the highway at 2,000 rpm's, calmly drive through a parking lot, and scream like a raped banshee when you mash the throttle.

How do I know this? Been there, done that.

What don't you like about the 427SR with Holley? Is your Holley the 770 Street Avenger that comes standard on Roush? I have a 427SR/TW in my GT40. Swapped out the Street Avenger for a 750 Quick Fuel with mechanical secondaries. What a difference in response! With a wideband A/F meter you can dial all the jets in (it was pretty close to start). Only $500.

henrik,

A couple of suggestions for the Dynatek/Dynaformance set up.

Get a wide band O2 sensor
Get the FAST ECU unit
Check your fuel delivery system. You must have constant pressure for the system to be reliable and it is possible you will need a surge area.

My suggestions...

TWM is the company that Roush uses for their FI. They can be purchased from a guy on this forum THOR. I use a FAST XFI and have had no problems. It is pretty easy to install. The hardest part is welding a bung on the exhaust manifold for the O2 sensor. It has a nice smooth power band that is easy to drive hard and hard to drive easy I have a picture of the cam label in my pictures.

Rwilla, what is your set up for fuel delivery? If you have pics it would help!

I am curious to see what others have done.

My Roush 427IR uses an Accel DFI system. I'd heard they'd switched to a new controller and swapping for the new one was possible but it looks like they may be able to whip it into submission. More to come.
