Trouble1

What a few weeks this has been, out driving one night headed home and the Cobra just starts back firing and running terrible. Finally died and had to call a tow service to get the car home. After much time and investigation, I found that the previous owner had put a bronze gear on the dizzy for a hydraulic roller cam, the gear looked like something from a Ginsu Blender. Replaced it with a steel gear as recommended by Comp Cams and all seems well, even runs better.
Sure would seem if someone builds a 347 stroker motor they would put the right dizzy drive gear on, but at least no damage to the motor.

Did anything get into the oiling system? There are a lot of people building engines that are not 100% proficient and do not ask enough questions. Some of the engines I have worked on amazed me how they stayed together.

Trouble1

Drained the oil and checked the filter didn't see much, but wanted to be sure no funny looking stuff floating around, this thing may have damaged before I bought the car and as I have been putting a few miles on it, it finally died. I agree it is amazing what people do when building motors.

Hey trouble, I had the exact same issue with a crate motor I bought. I was actually adjusting the timing as the gear was wearing!! I thought I had a loose hold down distr. bolt. Apparently some don't pay attention when they buy the aftermarket distributor gear as most come with bronze. (do no harm gears)

Anyway the motor has several thousands of miles on it since the failure-no worries.

It is no surprise there are a lot of Back Yard mechanics floating around or ones that never do their homework when making internal engine changes like that.
I'll bet the filters of these engines were full of metal bits.

Trouble1

Hey Beastly, if was interesting as the gear was worn like a blender blade, but after draining and cleaning and looking at the filter not much brass. I also learned a lot about re-setting the dizzy gear on the dizzy, fortunately I have a friend with a press and fixtures to hold everything without having to " hammer" everything to pieces. The engine/car only has 2600 miles on it now so I guess when the builder did the engine he didn't drive it much as this car was in storage for a long time and after I purchased it (1450 miles on the clock) and started driving it more that is when it wiped out the gear. Just glad it didn't do anymore damage than the gear ! Tried one re-start when it first failed and it shot some nice fire out of the dual quads so that was that, tow truck time ! Took awhile of chasing stuff down to find this as the timing marks are really messed up and hard to see , but after getting on TDC I could see something was way off, glad it wasn't the timing chain!

Yup, Mine was bizarre looking too and had sharp edges. Glad your back on the road. BTW I was using a MSD distro that had the soft gear on a Trickflow hydraulic roller cam have not had a problem since I change the distro gear.

I found that gear that went to crap on my MSD distributor.

This was a long time ago and the motor has since been rebuilt.

Trouble1

Yep, mine looked just like that. I ordered a hardened one from Jegs, so far no issues. Just a pain getting it set to the right dimension on the dizzy shaft. Had to measure the end play and all that stuff , but got it set.
