Diversion

Hello all, I need to replace the original GM tilt column in my Beast (which I did not build). I would like to replace the column in kind as it fits and works well. I believe the original recommended part was a late 80's Camaro/Firebird with some modifications? If anyone can help specify this it would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You are correct an 80's GM is a direct fit. Minimal mod to the column itself, I think you have to remove the lower collar, and you already have the length of shaft from the column to the rag joint. Mine is out of 1984 Trans- Am. What is going on with yours that it needs rebuilding or replacing?

Thanks 40k, if anyone else has further info that would be great. Or if you have an old modified column (perhaps from an Ididit swap) I would be a buyer.

On my column something is messed up by the tilt joint, between the actuating piece off the keyswitch "gear" and the rod that goes down to the electrical switch. The keyswitch wont turn all the way back to the off position, nor can it move to the start position.

I have a GM column that I am working with. The instructions say to remove the lower cover. This is what the flange is attached to. I am beating on this thing with a block of wood as it says to do. I am getting no where. Anyone have any thoughts about making this easier? Thanks

Ziggy 75; Get a bigger hammer. It takes quite a bit of energy to get the lower cover to move. It is part of the steering column that collapses during a crash.

Diversion; It sounds like your tilt joint bolts have loosened and permitted the key switch gear to jump a tooth or too. It would be easier to fix the column than replace it. Get an exploded diagram of the tilt column and you can see where the bolts are. Good luck.

I am guessing that I will need another hand to remove this thing. It would be nice if I could use this. I would hate to drop $300 on a new column.
