Gents,

This is my first posting, but I've been reading your helpful posts since I purchased my CMC 18 months ago. Since that time I've been going through it in an attempt to make it safer and more comfortable (to a point, I realize).

I would like to replace the existing GM (Chevette, I believe) steering column. Based on your postings, I see that some have used the Ididit tilt column while others went with the classic (fixed). I realize that i will have to relocated the ignition to the dash.

Are you satisfied with the choice you made or would you go with something different if you had to do it over again (tilt versus fixed & column length)? I'm most concerned about driving comfort and ease of getting in and out of the car (I'm 6 ft & my wife is 5' 5"...both average weight).

I don't mind spending the money to swap the GM column as long as I only have to do it once!

I'm 6' and can't/never use the tilt option on my GM column as my legs are bent to such a degree that the steering wheel barely clears my thighs at it's highest point. The turn signal when I make a left turn gets cancelled by my left leg when I let out the clutch. Very cramped if you go the manual transmission route. Why are you replacing the GM column? I ask because the wiring harness included with my kit has the GM connector that plugs right into the column. The IDIDIT may also, I never looked into it

I had a tilt column mocked up in my car and it did not work for me even with seat on the floor without the sliders and it seemed to push the steering wheel into the cockpit more.

Hello DamianAZ,
My CMC has the Chevette tilt column. Having adjustability suits me ok. If you go with an after market steering wheel, you'll need to specify GM or other to assure proper fit. I'm 5' 10" so maybe it's a little less confining for me with this setup. I do not think that I'd want the steering column to come any farther aft then what it is now. The Nascar in your chest setup doesn't suit my country cruiser style of driving.

With the GM column, I'm happy where my steering wheel is fore and aft. It is the tilt function that is of no use to me. Mine is out of 1984 Trans Am. If Originality is what you seek then of course this isn't the route to take. I too have my seats hard mounted into the floor all the way aft with no sliders. It's as comfortable as a Cobra can be. In hind sight I wish I had gone with a racing automatic instead of a Tremec TKO. The extra pedal down there makes it tight. I sawed off the fwd steering/dash support to make room for the clutch pedal which helped a ton, but I would be happier with the automatic. Especially with the nitrous

Thanks for the quick responses. Based on your feedback, it seems like a tilt column might not be the best option when i weigh the pros and cons (to "40K Later" thanks for the wiring tip, I confirmed that the Ididit column does have a GM connector. Also, I have an automatic trans so your comment regarding the TKO made me feel that I at least got something right!).

The only reason for me to replace the Chevette column would be for the classic look. The sooner I can get over the fact that this will never be a real Cobra the better off I'll be...at least financially. I guess I'll have to decide if it's worth the money and time to retrofit.

On a side note...

I've been on many forums for my CMC and C3 vette and can say that this is by far the most civil and helpful of them all. I'll buy you a beer or two if you ever make it to the Phoenix area.

We have had some brow beating goings on here about our cars as have others. You can still build your car anyway you see fit and be proud of it. A thoughtful built CMC Cobra is as good as any out there. When I first decided to put a 460 in my car I took flack from some FE guru's it certainly did not bother me one bit simply because I own the car but more importantly is that it is a kit car's after all. Good luck with whatever you do
