I am thinking of changing the steering column to a Flaming River or Ididit. Any comments, watch-outs, traps, help, etc. I would like to see opinions.

I have an IDIDIT. I'd probably go for the Double D design off the shaft. I used the splined column. I also put the dampener at the end of the shaft, then a slip coupling before the mount on the frame. I changed the mount to a Stainless Tie rod end. All my steering components are Borgeson. I had a bracket made to adapt the 2nd mount, as is offset. It works great, much better looking than the crap you get off a used Mustang. You'll need to patch your dash panel.

One additional comment, Keep the steering wheel position similar to your existing column. If you place the wheel too close to the dash, it will limit your knee/leg room for shifting and braking. The geometry on a Kellison/WCC is different from AC. If you are under 5'6" this may not matter, but if your close to 6' tall, leg room is essential, and that's one of the reasons I purchased this model. Even with that, I still modified the dash, door and seats to work better for my knees.

Thanks Xack, I have to go out of the country for a couple weeks so will have Daryle put it in while I am gone. I will send some pics. I planned to keep the same dimensions as the position of the wheel and seats is very comfortable for me. I am also installing the PS flow limiter as this gets really twitchy at high speeds. Also plan to install a polished plate to dress the dash area, we will see how that plays out.

Have Darryl remove the column and measure everything. You can't use a stock part. There are 2 measurements the shaft length and the column length. You need to make sure the column does not poke through the firewall. Essentially the column needs to be long enough for both mounting brackets.

Xack, just wondering, other than the work required why cant the column poke through the fire wall? I am thinking of making the column longer.

In a 2 words, "Real estate". Two parts, Column is the Outer business and the shaft being the moving part. You can poke the outer column through the firewall. The problem you'd have is more stuff to accommodate with little room to change plugs and the like. Is it going to interfere with your headers etc.? Since that part of the "Firewall" is at 45*, the hole is going to be huge to accommodate the whole column. No room for mistakes there. If your column is too long you gotta cut that big hole. My advice is to try to put the steering wheel where the Mustang wheel would be. If you move it too close to the dash, you'll hit your knee on it braking and shifting. Too far away from the dash and it's in your way. If you got the wrong one, just return it and order the custom measure. It'll be better in the long run, trust me. I hope your builder has not already done the fiberglass cutting....

Yep, already done. Put column through firewall a few inches and took off the "steering box" that is screwed into the firewall, no need for it. Fiberglass modifications required but trimmed it out nice. Actually I have more room for plug #4 without that box and he dropped shaft lower. Prior installation had the shaft swivel rubbing on the the front head bolt, terrible installation. Trimmed out dash to match aluminum dash panel. I will post some pictures. Raining today, not good light. Darryl did a great job.

I'm looking for your photos. I'm interested how it looks. How does it fit when you're behind the wheel? Can you move without restrictions? That's the most important item. Gotta be able to reach the brakes and clutch without getting your hands and knees in a jam. When I was curious looking at finished cars I saw this one with a Cheby engine in it. I sat in it and my knuckles were jammed against the door. OWCH! And then when I let off the clutch, my knee was jammed into the steering wheel and against the door on the left too. That is primarily why I have my WCC (Kellison).

Here you go. No problems with fit. Wheel is a little smaller but thicker and I like it.
