Smile tow bar on GT 40

I started last year reworking my GT 40.

I started painting it last week but today I finished installing a tow bar.
The round pipe is stainless and the end mounts are 1/4" aluminum plate.

Nothing fancy. I wanted something for the tow truck to hook to. Plus I'm going with a race car theme.

Dwight

Thanks
I worked on a couple of the cover plates today. Also drop in and check on the progress of the rear clip at the paint shop.

Dwight:

Keep in mind that the force associated with towing will be carried through the two plastic spacer blocks and two quarter inch bolts (if memory serves me correct, may be less) where the front aluminum extension meets the chassis at the top of the foot well.

For a very low speed tow off the race track should not be a problem, otherwise you may want to reinforce the connnection point noted.

I am not an engineer but I suspect the small bolts and plastic block were designed to give some break away protection in the event of a severe frontal impact.

I like the idea, however. Good work!

Chuck

Smile tow bar

Thanks for point that out.

I looked at my pictures and found one of the front end. The side plates that I mounted to are held on with a large aluminum block with two bolts. I installed the tow bar for a tow truck to hook to. There is nothing he could hook to without damaging fiberglass.

I have had my Cobra tow a couple of times and Coach's Coupe once. I could not find a place on the GT 40 to hook to. So I install this tow bar. I hope I never need it but;

Dwight

After looking at the picture I don't know if that block is plastic or aluminum. Allan covered it with bed liner. I will have to scrape some off to see.

Thanks I check that today.
