The new GT is cool and gorgeous. I can't
dispute that. However it seems that looks no different to me then other modern supercars. The new car to my eye clearly draws its cues more from the Aventadore, Enzo, 458 and McLaren more then it's supposed original progenitor the Ford GT 40.

The 2005 2006 Ford GT's or as otherwise referred to as a "petunia" project GT drew its design directly from its original progenitor the GT 40 and was a new rebirth of that car inside and out following the original lines, curves and character down to the cut outs in the roof as part of the doors etc...

This new car while a slick piece and gorgeous is a different animal.

Who can look at the new car and say "that's a GT40"

I was hoping for an updated Daytona Coupe to compete with the Viper and Vette.

This New GT will be unattainable except for oil sheiks and multi millionaires. Then you will have the usual greed from dealers with their ridiculous ADMs.

I think this new car has made the petunia era GT's instant classics overnight it will soon make them even more desirable.

I have to agree, I like the new car but don't see that the dynamics it may offer will be worth the 400k plus whatever mark-up the dealers tack on. I am pretty sure the race version will be competitive in the class they enter but how good will the street car be vs. competitors?
I do not know the weight but I doubt it will be in the 2200 pound range that would give it the kind of performance that competitive products with higher weight and HP have. My wife is a real car nut and her first comment after viewing the photos today was "that looks too much like a Lamborghini".
It is a beautiful car but so are it's competitors. I also wonder how it will stack up against the new mid engine Corvette which will most likely be half the price? I am very fond of the lines of both the GT-40 and Ford GT but I guess that just shows my age. Hell, I still think the Cobra is a nice looking car, talk about dated and timeless.

It's not a beautiful car. Too much front overhang, the rear panel area is a mess. I even question it's high speed aerodynamics design with those air bucket/ parachute air intakes.

I think homogulation rules should include a cap on the MSRP based on some factor of median wage in the country of production.

Designed to fit a specific body of rules, it fails as a design for everyday drivers, and falls far short of what is currently offered by other manufacturers.

I have a neighbor with a Viper who literally uses it to get groceries and run errands with. Another with a Corvette ditto, plus he commutes in it. Either of the vehicles would be quicker than this mongrel Ford, and both would be many orders cheaper than it.

If you want to race trotters, you need a sulky, if you want to race in whatever class this thing is made for, then you need either it, or something that doesn't require your supplier of a race car, to pummel the ground with his fists and feet in a hissy fit tantrum to get the rules changed to match his car's features.

600HP is a joke in the "supercar" category. This is more of a purpose-designed go kart in concept. Maybe next they will turn their engineers loose on a go kart.

Personally I see several styling cues that point to a distinct if subtle family homage to the original GT40. The entire upper front surface from the lip of the bumper to the lights, over the hood and including the windshield shape and front roofline are all GT40. The side buttress/wing/scoop/tunnel treatment is a growth of the small buttress scoop behind the side window in the MKI '40's. Even the overbite looking at the nose from the side pays tribute to its grandaddy. Is it also a bit Aventadorish as well? Definitely. But I'm pretty sure if I saw the photos with no info whatsoever, I would recognise the GT40 DNA.

Are you responding and critiquing as an enthusiast first, or as a current Ford GT owner? Yes, I realize that the reviews by current Ford GT owners is mixed and about a 60/40 split of like vs dislike, but is it because of what you have now that is jading your (and others) opinion, or perhaps at least some of what I have read, appears to be frustration as to the fact Ford has updated, and will be releasing this updated version, taking some of the shine off the current bodied GT's .

Personally, I could see one of these in my garage, yours too.

I have seen several complaints about the new car on other sites and that it isn't exactly like the originals. Any car built now will never be one of the originals and personally if I could afford one I would like to have one.

Good question. Not sure where my remarks are coming from but they represent my take on the car. I thought I was quite clear that I think the car is beautiful. Anyone with eyeballs that work can see that.

Actually the vast majority of the guys over on the FGT forum like the car a lot but there are criticisms of it. However, when asked if they would trade their Petunia era GT for the new one 90% have said no. Many members there can afford the entry fee of $400K for the new car (suspected entry fee).


To the contrary the consensus is that the new car will add shine to the previous generation as the Petunia car has become an instant classic overnight. If prices of the new car exceed $400K and many believe it will far exceed it based on the limited homologation build of only 1200 units world wide and dealer ADMs expect the Petunia era cars to shoot up in value raising the bar for entry into the Ford GT/GT40 fraternity.

I am not into the slick Italian like designs of the current era super cars. I like the cars from the era of my youth. At the time I bought my FGT I was deciding whether to buy a F430 at the time from the same dealer at that time. The Ferrari was sitting right next to my FGT on the floor. It was gorgeous, scuderia badges, gated manual trans all the options. I went for the classic iconic looks of the FGT/GT40. I am into classic lines and looks.

There is no mistaking the FGT for what it is. A modern reissue of the GT40 from its outside design and curves, to its, interior to its cutout roof/doors, its gauges, its seats etc...It was intended to be an unmistakable return of the GT40. The new car? Not so much. It followed it's own design path and took cues from the GT40/FGT and also cues from many other cars. 458, Enzo, Aventadore, McLaren. It is unquestionably high tech and slick inside and out.
One thing for sure, it is "no blue collar hero" like the original Ford GT and the Petunia FGT to quote Jermey Clarkson. It is more in the class of wine tasting, Bruno Magli wearing aristocrats.

My criticisms are no V8 and too far of a deviation from the original in appearance and design. I was hoping to see an updated Mark IIB type design
running the new 5.2 fpc engine.

With prices expected to be north of $500K after ADMs it will be unattainable for all but the likes of Jay Leno, oil Sheiks and members of the Ford family.

If Ford produces the new car in numbers then maybe it will become more attainable.

One thing is for sure I am like 90% of the others on the FGT forum who would not trade even up for the new car. Nope.

The Petunia era Ford GT is and remains one of the "must have" cars of all time. Not sure about the new one yet especially with all its competition which the Petunia FGT has out distanced in value retainage and its staying power of desireability.

My take.

Believe it or not I have now come full circle and finally agree with (God, I can't believe I am saying this publicly) Roger Davis. I don't see spending gobs of money for fancy cars that do nothing but sit at cruise nights and car shows. I drive my cars and enjoy them. I would not spend $400K for a car merely to have it sit at a cruise night which is too expensive to use for it's intended purpose, i.e. track events.

I have a hard time, however, selling what I already have in expensive cars as I become attached to them. They are like pets in a way and I become sentimentally attached. My cars become part of me.

I now prefer to spend my money on cars I can enjoy and use as intended. I am having an R spec Boss 302 built to Pirelli World challenge specs/Trans Am TA3 spec built by Rehagen racing this winter and plan on spending more time at the track with my son rather than at cruise nights sitting in a lawn chair answering the same questions over and over. I still do like cruise nights though.

Default Potential rival - y'all know I can't resist this sort of thing

Maybe or maybe not not head-to-head on the track, but ultimately the new GT will have to stand up against the upcoming mid engine C8 Corvette. At probably half the price of the GT and a bit less radical/more daily-driver friendly, the C8 is mandated to improve on the current C7 performance envelope. It will be a screamer and a looker, though there's much trepidation about how well the Corvette genes will be maintained in a mid engine configuration. Since it will share the showroom floor as a flagship model next to the current C7 for at least a couple of years, I predict a strong family resemblance and not too radical a shape - something like this:

What the hell is going on ............do I really hear some of you Blue Oval loyalists b!tchin'.

Ford has the balls to build yet another mid-engine supercar............a really awesome piece of machinery that no other American manufacturer has ever stepped up to built. Thrice!

And NO, it's not another retro, it's a modern material and design car with GT40 styling cues. Why? To go racing.
The original wasn't designed to be a street car. Don't believe me? Get a ride in one, and make sure it doesn't have A/C.

Come on guys embrace this amazing time in automotive history. Support Ford and it's racing effort for an All-American Lemans comeback. So effen-what if it isnt priced with a Fusion.
20 years from now when numb autonomous vehicles are roaming the earth and insurance rates are prohibitive for those few folks wanting to drive a car themselves...................remember this era.
Performance like this will not be around forever, lets have fun NOW dammit...........
