Default Gt40 Dream in jeopardy -NY Registration

Hello all,

I have just returned from a trip to Ohio where I test drove the Superformance Gt40.The car was fantastic as were the great guys at Dynamic Motorsport.

After the test drive I held off putting my deposit down (Very hard !)until I checked into the title registration process for New York. After reading what some of you went through here ,I wonder if it is even possible to successfully get a gt40 on the road here. (bumper heighth, side marker lights, lack of rear glass window, etc).

I really want the car.Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance!

Ps. I would go with a Roush 351 stroker (427) with RBT ZF transaxle

As a "specially constructed vehicle" under NY DMV regs, those issues are not raised. A SPF will register in NY. Do some searching here for info or contact Snakepit Automotive or 101 Motorsports, both NY state SPF dealers.

Here is the link:

http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/homemade.htm

I suggest you call them and ask direct questions (518) 474-2019. We are able to get vehicles of all kinds registered by following the instructions to the letter.

P.S. if everything works out you owe me a ride in that thing

Hi again,

Called the number in Albany and got an agent who let me know what is required.

(1) Sae markings for directional and stop lenses.Amber bulbs are ok in clear lenses.-I'll check with Dynamic

(2)Visors-I can put a couple on temporarily

(3)Padded dash-I think there is a degree of padding on the spf 40.Will check.

(4)Engine must say it is a replacement engine for a 66 vehicle and may not say "Intended for off road use only on invoice.

(5)MUST have rear safety glass -The car has a lexan rear window. Will check to see if I can remove it for inspection.

No problem with bumpers or lack of,ride height ,or side marker lights.

Eric

That is basically what they tell us about the Cobra replicas. Should be O.K. to "Improvise" some items for inspection. Good Luck, keep us up to date.

What's worse? The physical vehicle inspection in NY or trying to obtain a SB-100 sequence number in CA?

Eric,
I may be wrong but I believe the rear lexan glass is not your rear window. The rear bulkhead glass is the one that should count as it is safety glass and it is what separates the passengers comnpartment from the outside. I believe if you tell the inspector this and show him that it is a mid-engine configuration with an inner bulkhead safety glass you should be OK.

Eric,

It's not a big deal, really. If you surf through the NY Registration threads in this forum, you'll see what I mean. A hassle but not a big deal. As long as you pay all required sales/usage taxes and fees . I have gone through the process and if you want to get together, I can probably help you out. PM me.

Good luck!

If you don't mind sharing... how did NYS view the bumper requirement on the CAV and other GT40s? Any "heat" about defroster?

Eric, I don't think you will have any problems as long as you follow the custom vehicle requirements. As someone noted, you need a padded dash and visors. Although the instructions don't note these are needed I had to send pictures of them (they were makeshift and I immediately took them off after taking the pictures). Also, you will need a picture of a backup light and the light must have an R in the DOT/SAE number. I had one with a P but was told that meant it was a parking light so I had to get one with an R. I then took that off after the picture was taken and sent to Albany. All these items remained off for the visual inspection (they are only looking for stolen parts). To avoid the emissions requirements I had the engine installer note on the invoice that it was a replacement engine for a 1965 vehicle. The guys at DMV (Tom Noonan and another guy whose name I cannot remember) were great to work with and they don't mind you calling them prior to the inspections, etc. to make sure you are in compliance. All in all not a bad experience at all. Some have noted that a Kathy/Cathy is difficult to work with but I was lucky to get Tom to begin with and I directed all correspondence to his attention after calling to make sure he was in the office. Good luck. Let me know if I can help in any way. Oh, I should mention I was registering a BDR roadster, not a GT-40.

Oh, to answer Jay, nobody checked the bumpers although one does have to send pictures of both sides of the vehicle and the front and back. I asked Tom about a defroster and he asked if I had a heater. I told him yes and he said that would be fine. I checked the defroster box on the application. Remember, this was for a roadster and not a GT-40 so this answer doesn't apply to the GT-40. I am not familiar with the GT-40 enought to know where the front and back lights are but they are visible from the side on the BDR Cobra replica so they suffice for side markers.
