 Gary - thanks for your reply!  The needles are identical, but it was only on the re-reading of your post, and thinking through the fact that things got worse with flooding out of the primary side as well, that I put together *how* the needle adjustment works with the nut and the lock screw.  I had thought that the needle bottomed out, and didn't get that the nut affected the needle's depth in the bowl (here's hoping that's a better notion of how the adjustment works).
 The weather's too cold (for me - most people could handle it) to go pull the carb back off again, but when I get to it (hopefully this weekend), now I'll know what I need to do.
