Default Need your help...

I noticed today after driving my Cobra and getting it good and hot that when I went to restart the motor the engine hesitated when restarting. It lurched or hesitated a couple of times (you know—makes that sound like something is really binding and restricting the engine from turning over freely) before finally catching. I think my ignition timing may be off. Generally, is this phenomenon due to the timing being too advanced or too retarded?

Thanks for your help.

If the timing is too far advanced, it can make it harder for the starter to turn the engine over. However, before you start fixing something that may not be broken, why, other than your starting problem, do you think your timing may be off? Do you know what your timing numbers are (i.e., idle without vacuum advance, and at 3500 RPM)?

Tim,
Give me a little different description of symptoms. When you turn key to crank position what sound or action? ... does it just click or make a terrible grinding sound or engine turns over but slow -pauses - then turns over a little more but slow then starts?

If it is too much timing and sounds like last description then try flooding the engine a little. Floor the throttle maybe twice before hitting the key. By flooding a bit it will allow engine to spin over even when hot without bumping against the starter. It will gain a little extra RPM before it trys to start.

What's the timing set at? If timing is too advanced, it can cause a hard start.

Could be the starter getting hot as well....
