Interesting thought. So accustomed to thinking 'alternator' had not seriously considered the option of a true generator.
Have not researched it but guessing would need some sort of external regulation device.
Only significant power draw would be the lights and cooling fan.
I suspect one would want a robust battery to keep everything running when the output drops at low rpm / idle.
You mention Lucas. I am guessing the early Cobras used a Ford unit. I suspect they would not be that expensive.
