There are many reasons.

One coil with a distributor has many places for failure: only one coil, which works harder; long ignition leads, rotor to cap gap (spark has to jump this gap as well as the spark plug).

Multi coils: engine will still run with one coil failure, more "off time" for coils which extends their life, short or no leads, no other gaps to jump, no distributor to fail (rotor button, cap, pickup assembly).

Default Multi-coil

Thank Gary, Modern technology you cant beat it. I guess an old tech Ford windsor with a tip top ignition system is still going to do the job, as with my type of car it doesnt do a lot of miles for that matter I still have a couple of years to complete this project. I dont have an ignition at present and would like to enhance the ignition or make it as reliable as I can, I sold the MSD setup that we dynoed the engine with...
