Default getting plates in Indiana

I was wondering if anyone in your club from Indiana could tell me the best way of getting my license plates. I live in the northwest part of Indiana, my county does not have emissions testing. should have my cobra on the road in a few months. Thanks Harold

When you say put VIN# on the dash, how would you go about doing this. I have seen this in production cars and know what you are talking about, but I am not sure how you would go about putting the VIN# on the dash. The only thing I can think of would be to get a piece of paper, write VIN# on it and tape it to dash up by windshield. I assume this isn't the way to do it though. Could you please elaborate?

Drill two holes in the small plate, and install fake pop rivets with epoxy. Just cut and grind the back side of the rivets till they are flush with the back of the plate

Then use something like latex sealant, the weakest stuff you can find, just two tiny drops, to make it stay in place..push it on tight and hold it for a few minutes

One more question. Would the VIN plate be mounted on the driver side up close to the base of the windshield (like modern production cars), or would it be mounted on the face of the dash in front of the passenger seat?

I am probably a poor source for this info as I am amazingly stupid. However, I would put it on the driver's side where they are used to seeing it. The less confusion the better. The DMV folks really don't know what to do with these things. Like Bob posted before, he TOLD THEM that it should be a 65 Cobra because that is the way the police would / could identify it. My DMV branch just did what I told them as they had never even heard of a Cobra (they thought it was a Mustang and wanted to register it as such). It is registered as a 65 Cobra Replica.

just to let everyone know . i have been a restorer & rebuilder for almost 40 years. the cops take a real dim view of anybody messing with a vin tag this is a felony. probably won't get you jail time , but will cost you a small fortune to have a lawyer get you out of it. plus the cops will confiscate the vehicle until the problem is worked out.
in my view it's not worth the gamble just to save an hour waiting for an inspection

I had the BMV tell me what VIN they wanted the car to be known by. They took the number off the Manufacturers Statement of Origin and altered the number slightly to make it have enough characters to conform to modern VIN standards. I mounted my VIN plate on the frame near the front suspension. I engraved the number in a few other places on the frame and major components. (Just like the mfg's. do) I had a police officer inspect the car and sign a form that confirmed that the VIN was securely attached to the car and no other VIN's appeared anywhere else on the car. I took my Manufacturers Statement of Origin, my receipts for parts, and my build book photos into the BMV and walked out with an application for title. Two weeks later, I had a title.
