Default Engine Work/Port & Polish

Kieth,

Just a quick question for you. When you put together an engine do you usually port & polish the heads or is this something you only do upon request of the owner. Also, when and why do you recommend it?

This has a lot to do with how much power a customer wants to make. You want to use a head that has the smallest volume but that flows well at the lifts that you plan on running. There are heads out there that out of the box will make the power that some people want to make. We order a lot of our heads bare because we like to cut our own valve job, check the guide clearances, set the spring pressures and assemble ourselves for the application.
We do port on most of our heads and most of it is done on our CNC DMG 80 machine because we get the ports exactly the same every time and the engines make very close power every time. The cylinder heads needs to have the proper guide clearances so that the valve will come back on the seat and seal everytime as well as having seat that are true and round. There are several different angles that the valve job can be done with and we have about 30 different valve jobs we use depending on the application of the engine and the port design. We also cc the chambers and set these at a desired and predetermined size for the application and compression as well. I hope that this helps a little. Thanks, Keith Craft
