Smile Filed OR Sanded?

What do you guys think? If you were going to purchase a budget friendly Kirkham, would you be willing to do minimal body straightening if it could save you a little money, our would you want us to do the straightening?

We are contemplating offering the car in a raw welded state (with minimally warped panels from the welding process) for those who feel they are skilled enough to do it.

What do you think? Good idea on our part? BAD idea on our part? I estimate the filing upcharge from us would be $2900.

Good
less expensive car for our customers--more readily available to our customers.

Bad
potential for ugly Kirhams to make it into people's garages only to find out they aren't skilled enough, or short on time, or whatever, to finish it.

Thoughts?

David

I would agree, bad Idea. Mine was filed and still had some little 'wobbles' here and there. I think yu would be asking for trouble.

Thank you very much! It is certainly better to hear about any bad ideas I may have BEFORE I actually try them out!

Bad idea, Sanding takes a lot of time but little skill. Straightening an aluminum body takes a lot of skill. I would not reccomend this idea.

I agree: BAD IDEA!! I'd hate to see a top quality product like the Kirkham get a bad reputation because of a builder's lack of expertise when it comes to body work and sanding. Besides, cobra kit builders are sometimes in a hurry to get the car done and on the road and MAY take shortcuts which could result in an inferior completed Kirkham. Were I in the market for a KC, I'd PAY the extra MONEY.

Bad Idea: If I were to pay the extra bucks for a Kirkham I wouldn't want to have to touch the body.

Whether or not you would want someone else to do that kind of work on your car is up to you.

Good Idea: Most of the fiberglass guys don't seem to mind & we all know what can happen even with fiberglass & an unexperienced bodyman. I think if someone spends Kirkham dollars for a car they are going to be willing to see it through correctly. THen again...I could be wrong

So I guess it could go either way if I were in your position... Not much help am I

Ditto. Bad idea. It's not like fiberglass where the customer can sand and fill the seams.

David, why haven't you guys invented the automatic car sander yet? Think of it as a car wash but it uses sandpaper instead of cloth. Pass that baby thru a few times and come out nice and smooth.

xlr8or,

Man, I dream, and dream, and dream about the day I could do that--automatic sanding! I just simply can't figure out how to do it...yet. Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!

Now, what am I supposed to do with the 9 raw welded experimental cars that just arrived!

I guess I better start filing.

Gee,

I didn't even get one maybe out of this!

Like I said, better to have a bad idea here that one out with customers.

Bad Idea! I agree with the guys that say any bodywork on the aluminum body should be done by Kirkham!

I think that Kirkham HAS the manpower and knowledge to deliver a straight body, with NO needed effort from the buyer.

Jim Barnett has it right: If I were in the market for a Kirkham aluminum body, I would pay the extra money!

(I might even have you guys semi-polish one for me!)

BTW: I like posters!

Send me one also, Hyde and I will have a contest as to whether guys who make metal body or wood body guitars can best finish an aluminum car!
