427 Street Car

What headers? Where is the battery?What gas tank? Are the street 427's using. Thanks

Dear Big:

It seems that the K's don't always closely monitor postings. On the other hand, I've always been able to get answers with a phone call. You might cut them a little slack right now because I'd wager that they are up to their armpits getting ready for the upcoming Summer Summit. Better yet, show up at the Summit and get all your questions answered and a ride around Larry Miller's new track at the same time!

No, I am not asking this question on this forum because of lack of contact with the Kirkhams. Every time I have bugged them they have been more than patient. It was Sunday and I just wanted to know what the guys on the street are doing. Thanks

saltytri, BTW where does your ex. exit? sides? back? Are you going to paint it? Where is your battery? You have a very nice car. My wife and friends have bunr their legs too many times so I am trying to lean towards no sidepipes this time around. Thanks again.

The one finished street car that I have seen had the battery forward of the passenger footbox.

Some guys use the shorty headers, some use a cast centre outlet manifold like the truck ones. The burn factor you already mentioned, the earplugs that the sidepipe guys wear for any long trips is another consideration. The side pipes exit just by your ear. The battery as Ron mentioned is inside the right front fender just forward of the footbox. The gas tank for the street car is smaller than the SC's (18 gal vs 42) and has a spare wheel tray over the top of it. I've been making street tanks to original specs from stainless. See my gallery for more info and dimensions. Saltytri's car is a sweet example with the Ceandess fuel filler cap without the recess. It's the nice touches like that for us street guys that make all the difference!

Big:

The headers are shortys bent out of pipe, not cast. The pipes run under the body far enough inboard that they can't be seen very easily. They turn out just in front of the rear wheels. I never really considered rear exhaust because of the difficulty of looping the pipes up and over the suspension. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but my recollection is that the vintage street cars (which is to say almost all of the 427s) required some extra surgery on the inner panels at the top of the rear wheel wells in order to make room for the pipes. Plus, I'm sure that I would have ended up with smaller diameter pipes.

My batteries are behind the passenger seat.

I honestly don't know the capacity of the tank. I'm pretty sure that it is larger than an original design street tank - it has extensions on the sides that stick out laterally into the space that would otherwise be occupied by the pipes had they gone over the suspension and back down at the rear. It couldn't all that much larger in capacity because I do have the fiberglass recessed trunk tray. Someday when I run out of gas I'll write in and tell you how much the tank holds!

Thanks for the nice comments on the car. The Ks do a great job and take good care of their customers. I like the simplicity of the appearance, though I also admire the more aggressive look of the 427SC. I've been thinking lately about painting it. Black would look wicked and it would be almost like getting a new car for a fraction of the price.
