Default Cobra Weights

David,

There is a thread where you weighed a bunch of original Cobras and some of yours and listed all the weights.

It doesn't have any weights for an original 289.

I am trying to get an accurate weight for the 289 Cobras. Everyone quotes the Shelby claimed weight of 2,020 lbs. Problem is, that would make the 289 about 300 lbs lighter than the 427 without motors. I can't see where there could be that much difference in the coil spring chassis.

Any one else who has weighed an original 289 please chime in with the weight.

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks,

Both of those have the weight for CSX3104 which is an original 427. There is no weight for an original 289.

Default 289 Leaf Spring Cobra Weights

December's AC Owners' Club Magazine has:

Period evidence is that the minimum weight of a 260 worm & sector FIA Cobra is 2,028lbs (920kg) and the minimum weight of a 289 rack & pinion FIA Cobra is 2,129lbs (965kg). These weights, including oil, water and spare wheel but excluding hard top and side-screens, accord with:
 Period published third-party weights (see, for example, Road & Track-Sept 62)
 1963 & 64 Le Mans Cobra roadster scrutineering weights (Poste VII ‘sur le bascule’ for CS2131, CSX2142 and COX6010)
 The present-day weights of period race cars that have not subsequently been modified.

If you send me (rstainer@radcothouse.co.uk) your email addtress I'll let you have the entire article.

Road car weights are as per period magazine car tests.
