What does a 427W and a VW 1.8L have in common
I went to get oil filter for my big, bad, mean, powerful, Ford 427W engine and another for my little economic 1.8L (thats 110-cubic-inch) and go figure they use the same oil filter. So is one over doing it or the other under doing it. Then I look at the oil filter for a tacoma truck, it is the size of a baseball. WTF, who figures this stuff out!!
Back the VW which uses 4qts to fill'r up. The filter itself uses about 1qt so that is 3qts left for the engine.
The cool thing in the VW is the sandwich adapter at the filter that circulates coolant through the oil to bring it up to temp faster and once up to temperature it is the "oil cooler". ...and it has the same threads and it is ment to fit the standard windsor filter, hmmm...

In OEM applications, oil filter location and allowable room usually determines the size of the oil filter more than anything else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW: Im some early 90's Nissan 4x4 trucks with a V-6 engine, it only took 3 quarts of oil for an oil change including the filter change!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 QUARTS TOTAL, that sure doesn't seem like much oil, but I know of a number of them still running around with 200,000+ miles on them...........

True Dave, some of these old Nissans take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. I see them abused so badly by small local contractors - overloaded with quarry stone and concrete blocks to the point they look like they will break in the middle and they just keep going for years on end.

Sounds like sme more creative engineering on the part of the filter makers. They assume if it fits it ok, and allows the seller to stock fewer numbers. like PH43 being sold for PH8A and vice versa. I would be sure that the specs are correct (like drain back valves, bypass pressure, etc.) I bring this up because back in my long lost youth, I bought an economy filter that 'fit' a Toyota (sisters) and was correct in the application guide, but lacked an anti drainback valve which let all the oil flow out of the filter when the motor was stopped, making 'no oil' starts every time.

What filter is your KC motor using? My Roush with the remote filter uses a FL1HP (Ford). I actually use the K&N version, but can't recall the # off the top of my head. It is actually a pretty large filter (a little larger than my filter on my 6.6 Duramax). That's a huge filter for that little VW motor.

Tucson Unified School District still has an 80 to 82 Datsun truck STILL in revenue service.

Hey, Nissan is so conservative, I suggested they use light bulbs for headlights...they are still debating the pros and cons.

SP01715,
I'm using a mobil 1- 301 or redline- 3001 (they are the same filters inside) just depends what the car parts place has in-stock. I used an Amsoil for the break-in period and was happy with it, but haven't beeen squared away enough to purchase another Amsoil in advance. From looking at the differnet reports all three are good. Cost is similar enough for me.
With the oil change one thing that is different between the Mobil1 10w-40 and Mobil1 15w-50 was about 15psi more oil pressure with the thicker stuff. More than I thought it would be.
Yeah overkill for the VW fiter- but is there such thing as overkill for an oil filter?

If the motor says Ford on it, so should the oil filter....it's just the right thing to do!

When I bought my new Olds Aurora in 95, I wanted to put a K&N air filter in it. I called K&N and they said they did not make one for the Aurora. So I went to PEEP Boys and cross referenced their air filter guide. I found that the Aurora used the exact same air filter as the Impala SS at that time. So I ordered a K&N for an Impala SS and it went right in. It was the same!
You would think that K&N would cross reference all their filters to expand the reach of their existing products.

The K&N can be installed / removed with a socket. Much easier in my car than a filter wrench.
