Default $2,500 Parking Fines in Indy

More fun and games from cities desperate for cash in the "Great Recession".
A possible "bonus" fine of up to $2,500 if you challenge a ticket in court and lose? Could be. Welcome to Indianapolis.

Wow, that is something. But it does seem to me that the city should not be able to fine a person for utilizing their legal right to take it to court. What if the person contesting the ticket wins the case. Is the city then going to pay them the $2,500? Darn, I hope none of our city councils around here read this.

What really frustrates us all is how the legal system is becoming almost illegal, setting itself up so we have no say at all.Making it legal to rob us blind. Is it any wonder why so many do not have any faith in the system!

Wow... and I always thought that this kind of "legal daylight robbery" just happens in Switzerland...

If all of us could refrain from getting any traffic violations for one month and going to court to be fined and paying out those large sums of fines to the courts, most cities would have to close up shop with in that month also.

Ah, well this article is not entirely true. My son-in-law is a lawyer in Indy and I happen to know Judge Young myself. There is an up-charge for challenging a ticket and losing, but not as much as quoted in the article. It is set to cover the additional court costs. They charge it because the city refuses to fund the court system and Judge Young is trying to clear out the backlog of cases. Think of it as a "pay-as-you go" plan. You use it, you pay for it. I'm not saying I agree with it, but there is some common sense basis behind it.

Now personally, I wouldn't even have a clue about what the upcharge is. I've never had to pay it.

They set up a speed radar camera here in Tacoma near the Emerald Queen casino on Bay street. After the first month they project $11,000,000 at end of year.

There is a new fee structure in MA to fight tickets. $25 is the charge to see the magistrate, and $50 if you appeal to court. You pay this whether you win or lose.
